Piers' blind defense applied to a sng

Postby striker2550 » Sat Oct 08, 2005 5:25 pm

20/2 limit sng

I play pretty aggressively in this situation anyway, but reading and thinking about Piers' blind defense strategy, I was very confident on this play.

When he 3 bet my preflop raise I "knew" he had a big Ace or at least a medium Ace. Was crossing my fingers it wasnt a big pair but I think this guy would have smooth called a big pair.

PokerStars Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind t400 (2 handed)

BB (t3720)
Hero (t9780)

Preflop: Hero is Button with [Jh], [5h].
Hero raises, BB 3-bets, Hero calls.

Flop: (6 SB, t2400) [8h], [5s], [4d] (2 players)
BB bets, Hero raises, BB 3-bets, Hero calls.

Turn: (6 BB, t4800) [9c] (2 players)
BB bets, Hero raises, BB calls t520 (All-In).

River: (9.65 BB, t7720) [2c] (2 players, 1 all-in)

Final Pot: 9.65 BB (t7720)
I do not think, therefore I am not.

Results
BB has Kc Ac (high card, ace).
Hero has Jh 5h (one pair, fives).
Outcome: Hero wins 9.65 BB (t7720).

I made a good (lucky) read and thanks to Piers' posts on blind defense, I felt confident pushing this one. Made a nice 68$ profit too. :D

Currently on page 2 of the limit forum titled "blind defense". He also talks about it in other places but i cant remember where. Maybe in his journal.

Most of the time your opponent will completely whiff on a flop and if he has high cards he hates to give up a hand that he doesnt realize when he is behind.
Thats the case w/ this hand. I read his hand (correctly, for a change  ) well and knew i was ahead. So I pushed him.

Anyway, pier's posts are a "must" read.

Maybe I've misunderstood pier's blind defense writing, but being in the small blind headsup isn't really applicable, I think.

I think he describes more about defending your blind with two live cards very aggressively in the big blind against LP raisers. In example of this with your hand might look like this.

Dealt to me [[Jh] [5h]]
(bunch of people folding), Button raises, small blind folds, hero calls.

Flop [2s] [4c] [9d]
Hero checks, button bets, hero raises, button calls.

Turn [4s], hero bets, button folds.

Now if the turn comes with a face card (especially an ace) and you get popped, it's time to go home and wait to fight another day.

Basically defending aggressively against LP raisers (especially people who raise in LP, a lot) with hands unlikely to be dominated (Defending with say K4o or A2o is more likely to get you into trouble, than say low suited cards, connected or not.)

Now against the small blind, unless he usually gives the blinds to you, I'll play anything.
If the small blind has folded to me a few times on previous orbits and then suddenly raises on the 4th time, I'll usually give it to him unless I've actually got something.

On the other hand, I'm not piers... I'm just a poser newbie. I suggest you go find his posts.

Ichoi, you are absolutely correct. I just took a small part of what he discussed and used it in a different situation.

While this was not a blind defense, it was heads up which is what a blind defense becomes. This particular player would not raise HU w/o semi big cards. So I just twisted the blind defense to fit this situation.

One of the things I got out of reading Piers' defense posts was to turn the screws hard when you get a pc of the flop and u r sure the opponent didnt.

Anyway, hats off to Piers for at least getting me to think.

I've never been a huge fan of limit SNGs.

I mostly only made this response since I am now the latest responder to the top seven or eight posts

Ive just begun playing the 20/2 sngs. It seems pretty easy to cash in these things by playing very tight early, then loosening up when it gets down to 5 or 4 players.

Very small sample, but so far im up.
