6max - slow-play or raise set on flop here?

Postby EscapePlan9 » Sat Oct 15, 2005 5:37 am

I'm not much for slow-playing in limit. If the pot were smaller and there were less players in the pot, I'd highly consider it. Here I didn't want anyone with a straight draw or gutshot draw outdrawing me cheaply.

Party Poker 0.50/1 Hold'em (6 max, 5 handed)

Preflop: Hero is BB with [Qc], [Qs].
UTG calls, MP raises, 1 fold, SB calls, Hero 3-bets, UTG calls, MP calls, SB calls.

Flop: (12 SB) [Qh], [5c], [Jd] (4 players)
SB bets, Hero raises, UTG folds, MP folds, SB calls.

Turn: (8 BB) [8d] (2 players)
SB bets, Hero raises, SB calls.

River: (12 BB) [Qd] (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, SB calls.

Final Pot: 14 BB

I wish that mizor didn't lead into me on the flop. I would have been much happier with betting out, someone raising, and me 3-betting. Would any of you risk the slow-play here? The biggest reason I went for the raise was the large pot and connected broadways.

With QJ on the board I'm happy to raise there. If the board was really ragged, like Q72, I would consider the slowplay. In the 6max though, playing it fast is almost always the better option.

The reasons not to slow play in 6 max (not that it should never be done but i mean in general) is because people tend to call more and to overplay thier hands more, and are more willing to jam it from the get go with hands that you wouldnt always think. For example, say you have an uncoordinated board like Q73 and you have QQ. Often a guy with A7 will put in multiple bets on the flop and fire the turn also...so by waiting around for the turn you are missing bets.

On the flipside of that coin, a tighter player with A7 is much more prone to muck to the turn raise than he is to a flop raise and a turn bet. Theres something about that turn raise that represents alot more strength than jamming it up on the flop and leading the turn. People do that with things like Flush/straight draws, and sometimes even just AK. That turn raise though, is enough to scare players out that mightve called otherwise.

Lastly, and i have done this many-a-time and felt retarded about it, is call it down and raise on the river, only to find out that i get 4 bets out of an oppoonent whose hand was nutty enough that hed have given me four bets on every street practically (usually set / set, or top 2 pair / small set or something like that) - and theres no crappier feeling than missing like a million bets.

Of course theres always that pot where you get the same flop with the same cards and you check and turn a K againt some mizor with KJ that wouldve mucked to a flop bet...But i think in general, i prefer to jam the pot.
