How much higher in B&M?

Postby shobute » Tue Oct 18, 2005 1:54 am

Hi,

So, still planning to play some B&M soon... no experience with live play except for some casual home games.

I am comfortable online playing 3-4 tables of $200NL.

I have heard that in live play it is common for people to play at higher limits than they do online.

How accentuated is this?

I'm thinking 3/6 is probably okay, but 5/10 is too much of a stretch.

Of course this will vary to person to person, and let's say that bankroll isn't a major concern.

Thanks!

I played 100nl and 50nl online but play 1/2 NL live (300 buy in). I've also played 2/5NL (500 buy in) but wasn't as comfortable. Since i'm playing less tables, i can play higher up and not feel uncomfortable. Its more, how much are you willing to lose if you lose your stack? Determine that and go from that.

Also, live players are often worse than online players. If you think online players suck, wait til you see what happens live. Expect 10x and more BB raises preflop.

Shobote i play mostly 2/5 nl live and usually play 2 - 3 $100 tables playing online. But only because I feel much more comfortable playing live than online. Depending how much you are bringing you could probably be comfortable playing $1000 buy in or higher. Though I have found that while the $500 table can be very fishy often when you get bigger than that the games get significantly tougher. Though in Vegas the 5/10 $1000 max games play like a $100 party table.

Hey Shobute,

I'd start with 1/2 or similar. Work your way up from there if things are going well.

Playing live is quite different to playing online. I play live "properly" a few times a year, and find it quite hard to play my usual game.

FWIW I play 400NL online, and there is no way I'd play 5/10 1000 buy-in.

I play mostly Limit, and I'm playing 5/10 online. Usually at a B&M if I'm alone, I play 10/20 or 15/30. With friends (with smaller rolls) 3/6, or 4/8.

Brian said that live players are worse than online players--he's dead on. I could probably start of with $1000 playing 10/20 on Monday and make more than I make as a pharmacist by Friday. It's just not fair to have a solid player sit at one of these tables, ESPECIALLY at the Taj. You'll get your occasional good player, but more often than not, there are 5 donks at every table, all completely willing to give you chips.
