I started playing poker, NLHE specifically, around 1 1/2 years ago and immediately started making money. However, since I really didn’t know how to play my beginners luck run out and that trend quickly turned around. Around this time I discovered bonuses and with the addition of bonuses I could make a little money overall although I was losing money playing the game.

Around 4 months after I started playing I had a really bad month and lost a decent amount of money even though I was clearing bonuses. I really wanted to continue playing but at that time I was playing at Paradise and the $50 tables were the smallest buy in that I could play. I couldn't move down and my confidence was shot so I ended up becoming discouraged and only played on and off for the next 6 months or so.

Around that point I was introduced to PLO8 and immediately was drawn to it. Unfortunately just like NLHE I started winning before I really knew how to play and became discouraged when my luck ran out. However this time I did the smart thing and starting playing limit O8 (which at .5/1 is an aquarium) until I really understood the game.

I had 1 losing limit month, then 2 break even months, then something clicked and I started winning. I had a couple of winning months, then switched back to PLO8 and destroyed that game for a couple of months.

After that I went back to NLHE because I wanted to be positive in all of the games that I played. I started playing the NLHE $25 tables and beat them to a bloody pulp for about a month. Then I attempted to move up to the $50 table and got my ass handed to me, so I moved back to the $25 tables, recouped my loses, and decided to go back to PLO8.

I made that decision a few weeks ago and since then have played some PLO8 $25 tables to get myself used to seeing 4 cards again. I have been playing well so I think that it is time for a run at the $100 tables.

I plan on posting in this journal for every session that I play. I will keep the results on in the first post updated and I will post specifics for each session. Those specifics will include:
- Stats for the day
- Any hands that I think I played well
- Any hands that I think I played poorly
- Any hands that I had questions on.

Hopefully this will go better then my move to NLHE $50 so wish me luck.

I though that I would add my previous two sessions for this month because they were great and I want to start off on the right foot.

Both of these sessions were bust the fishies days where there were tons of bad players at my tables and I was making hands.

My opponents were total fish but I still don’t like this play. There are only a couple possible situations
1) One of them has me beat for the high and at best I have a 2 card free roll
2) One of them has me tied for the low in which case it is about 50/50 for who has the better high.

In either case I don’t have any fold equity.

I generally will push any decent hand against a fish but I think this hand would have been better served to check call and try to bring both of them along.

No good $100 tables when I started so I decided to play a session of $25 tables. I know, I am a total pussy and I swear I will actually sit down at a $100 table on of these days.

This was a good session overall. I started very slow, not making many hands and getting sucked out when I did have good hands. I was down $20 over my first 400 hands after playing pretty well which actually put my on tilt for the first time in a long time. I then made one really stupid play (see below) which shook me back to reality. Then the cards started to come and I started making money.

I don’t know why I bother played party during the day. This session stretched from 7:00EST to 11:00EST and when I logged off the games were sooooo much better then when I started. I should start doing better time management and finish my homework early and play poker later.

My opponent was slightly loose and mildly aggressive but he hadn’t got totally out of line. His PTO stats VP$IP 42, WtSD 26, PRF 8, Total Agg .4

I need to take down that flop 50% of the time. What do you guys think? Like the raise IP pre-flop? Like the flop continuation bet?

First about the bad hand from Tues, I agree, don't push that turn as you are only gonna get half the pot and possibly quartered. You know better than this.

Next, the questions from your last post. You know me and raising preflop but I play a little different for O8 but I don't likeyou raising in ep with basically a high only hand. I take a cheap flop and fold while only costing myself 50 cents.

I like the preflop raise; on the flop it is very independent on the opponent. Against a bad player who only looks at his own hand half a pot bet might already give you the required information. Against a good player you need to either check or bet pot. If you had the Ac I think a pot bet is in order. Against someone who is capable of bluff-raising there I check and let him have it. Otherwise I think a bet is fine.

That said, I have not much clue about PLO8...

Where do you play btw?

So when do we get to see some of the PLO8 $100 tables you have been talking about??

This was payback for 3 great sessions in a row. I couldn’t get a hand to hold up and I couldn’t hit a draw. Couple that with not playing very well and a bad session doth make.

Couldn’t find any good $100 tables so played the $25 tables. I think that I am going to have to play later at night (11:00 EST) if I want to play the $100 tables because the games look good right now and they didn’t look good 2 hours ago.

In the past I have 4-5 tabled. Today I tried to stretch it to 6-7 and I think this was a mistake. I made a very stupid play because I was rushed on my decision. I think that I am going to scale it back to 4-5 for a little while, then if I am feely frisky try 6.

This may be controversial but I really like the way that I played this hand. I don’t want to push OOP on the flop with so many scare cards on the turn. Also the aggressor being right behind me is a great advantage for a CR since this is a PL game.

I got really lucky to not get scooped here. Opponent was loose pre-flop but won a lot at showdown, so I though that I had some fold equity. However, since I was playing 6 tables I didn’t have time to really think about how badly that 3 hurt my hand.

I was planning on slowing down on the turn if I hit a heart or missed my str8 draw. Then the turn gave me a monster draw. Anyone take the free card here?

Found a couple of good $100 tables to play. Overall the play is better then the $25 tables but it is still very beatable, I think I have found a home.

Day started very slow, couldn’t get a hand or hit a flop. Then I won a couple of hands, and things started loosening up. Until I raked my first major pot I was nervous, and wondering if I really could play at these levels. Then, after my first $150 pot I settled down and started playing well. It surprised me, the bigger pots didn’t phase me at all. I just saw everything in % of pot and % of a stack.

I think that this hand it the type that separates the loosing players from winning players. I am happy with this hand because I wasn’t even bothered that I had to fold this flop with a monster pre-flop.

I really wish I was IP for this hand, but OOP how do you guys think I played it?

hand 1
i think you played this too passively. i would have wanted to get all of the money in on the flop -- specifically, after the $20 reraise i would have wanted to pot it. you're only scared of a K and backdoor draws. you could have priced them out unless someone had your hand with a redraw.

hand 2
good lay down, but i would have liked my hand much more if it was HU or 3-way... you have plenty of good backdoor draws and huge implied odds. anyway, you played this one well...glad you didn't get married to it.

hand 3
i think this is wishy-washy on the turn. i would raise or fold. you're not making bandit make any hard decisions, and you've got plenty of outs to test him. you might get stacked, but you can improve your equity by forcing him out or making him make an error in calling your bet.

hand 4
i would be tempted to CR flop and/or try to get a free turn card... depends on aggression of your opponents. if he calls a CR, i would be willing to concede the pot if i didn't improve on the turn. i think your line is another way to play it, but i always hate it when i find myself in this situation. tough one.

Overall an eh session. I sat down at a good $100 table and a good $50 both of which dried up in a hurry. Once they dried up I contemplated moving back down to the $25 tables but I felt foolish abandoning a table with an average pot of $35 for a table with an average pot of $15.

I ended up splitting a lot of pots which makes it hard to win any money. I also got called down with all kinds of crap which took ½ my pot, see below.

I did this a couple of time during the session (this was the worst). That hand is questionable to play in MP and calling that raise OOP is a leak. I had trouble with this when I moved from NLHE $25 to NLHE $50; I played more hand then I should have. I didn’t call this raise at the $25 table and I really should be doing it at the $100 table.


When I started playing the $100 tables I said that I was going to semi-bluff more which I have. However, I have been getting called down by total crap, so I am wondering how useful the semi-bluffs are.

There were a couple more hands like these, which I am too lazy to find. Overall, these guys seems to call as much as the players at the $25 tables. Is semi-bluffing really that a good idea, or are these hands not representative?

"The question" from your saturday post, you really need to bet something on that river. You're completely giving up on a decent sized pot by checking.

Interesting stuff though.

There is not better way to make yourself question if moving up was correct then getting permanently played back at, and as a result playing badly.

I don’t know what it was about this session, but it seemed like every time I would make a hand everyone would fold; however, every time I was semi-bluffing or stealing I would get played back at. I am betting pot in both cases so I can only assume that I was just getting unlucky.

The worst part about this session was after getting played back at repeatedly I started pushing too many hands. Right before I moved up to the $100 games I played 5 sessions of the $25 table and felt like I played very well in all of them. Since I have move up I only played well in my first session.

This is the hand that I was furious with myself afterwards. I really don’t know why I am doing this. I didn’t make plays like this at either $25NLHE or $25PLO8. In both cases once I moved up I made stupid plays at the pot.
