I thought I played this pretty well... checking the turn to extract another bet from my really obvious straight (opponent was conservative and pretty straightforward), but my friend who was watching gave me a solid talking to about getting money in with cards still to come - his point was that the guy would be more likely to call if he thought he had some hope... and also that i'd feel really stupid if I got counterfieted or drawn out on by a flush

I very frequently make very similar checks.

I think this one really boils down to a read of your opponent. Is he someone that will -

a) lay down a probable TPTK to a flop raise followed by a turn bet (especially when a scare card like the King hits)?

b) bet out on a non-scare river if you check the turn?

If you think the answer to both is yes, then checking the turn and raising the river is the best way to get the most bets from him.

At the levels I play - $.50/$1, there are so few players for which (a) is true that betting the turn is by far the +EV play - if they caught any part of the board, they'll call down, and if they didn't, you're most likely not going to get anything else out of them whether you bet the turn or river.
