i check and try to control the size of the pot. If you think he's got a low/wheel draw on the flop, don't play into him by betting as he's now drawing very thin or way ahead.

looking at this again, this is a way ahead/way behind situation. if you're ahead, then you'll probably get at least half (if not more) at SD. if you're behind, the ugliness in the OP is going to happen.

i guess what i am trying to say is that the only hands that fold are most likely ones that you are already beating. i realize that a janky low could chop at SD (maybe -- depends on the river), but i think that you can pick better spots to be aggressive.
