Session started very slow and made me start to wonder if I knew how to play this game at all (I won 3 of 109 hands). Then I played some SHed stacked someone then the flood gates broke.

Every time that I am away from SHed I forget how much fun it is and how easy it is on the $25 tables. I really wish that Party would open some 5 max, cause that would be a blast.

I had another realization while playing. I still haven’t 100% convinced myself that I am a winning poker player. I am positive for the last 9 months and 14 of my last 15. Of those 9 months I have been over $250 for all of them, $500 for 6 of them, and over $1000 for 2. I am not boasting (there are people who make tons more then this) I think I just have to keep telling myself so I don’t forget. It still amazes me that I have been positive for around 15K PLO8 hands and positive for another 15K limit O8 hands, yet 2 bad sessions make me begin to question myself.

I did a very good job of controlling the pot this session. 2 examples.

Not a very nice session. I didn’t play very well and didn’t make hands which generally leads to a losing session. I played very well for my first 5K hands or so, and lately I have turned into a bit of a calling station. O8 is a game about making big laydowns with mediocre hands against aggression which I haven’t been able to do lately.

Just to realized exactly how ugly the number below are, about 100 of these hands were played HU and another 150 were played at a table with < 4 people.

I usually don’t push this hand with a str8 on a 2 flush board but that A3 adds a lot of equity to my hand. It takes an almost perfect hand to get me in trouble HU, and 3 way I am in good shape most of the time. Add in fold equiry and donk factor (like I had here) and I like this play.

Another session where I played poorly and didn’t make cards. I can’t really blame this downturn on variance, I am just plain playing poorly. Both of my last 2 sessions should have been breakeven sessions or even small loosing sessions but I donked away a stack in both which killed my session.

I am moving into the end of this semester of school and I have a large End Of Semester presentation coming up. It is scary as hell, my team goes in front of all of the professors / mentors and say what we did for the last 4 months. Then they all spend the next 30 minutes telling you everything that you did wrong and how stupid you are. They like to tag team you; the mentors take talk about industry and tell you why what you did was wrong in a practical sense, then the professors tell you why everything you did was wrong in a theoretic sense. CMU one the top software engineering college in the nation so combined all of the mentors have about 200 years of industry and the professors are all well versed in all of the latest research. This means unfortunalty they are generally correct about what you did wrong. However, building software is incredibly difficult and it is always easy to be on the outside using hindsight to say what I did was wrong, but not suggesting a way to do it better in the future.

I have tried to keep this journal about poker, so that little rant did have a poker connection. I think this presentation is really hurting my poker game. I have been stressed out of my mind for the last 4 weeks and I think my patience is slipping. I have always felt like it was discipline, patience, and energy that let my make the good laydowns. I would always want to click the call button, but a little voice in my head would always say “don’t call a pot bet hoping to win ½ the pot.” Now that little voice isn’t saying anything until after I click the call button.

The presentation is in 6 days, then I have a large vacation. I am not going to play poker for the first part of that vacation, so we will see if my game improves after I recharge a little.

This river call has got to be the worst play in the history of poker. I really use to play this game well … I swear I did … *The shame of making this play makes Gooper drop his head and slink away*

re the bad hand

i think the call pf was, um, not so good... mainly because there was already one caller. i would have dumped. the hand itself i think is (barely) playable HU, but it's close to being one of those high hands that i really like to play HU (e.g. change the 9 to a K or Q).

well, you played it, but the mistakes didn't end pf.

on the flop, hhhmmmm, i like the set, but with the A on the board and a flush draw, i could be looking at set over set and be drawing to one out. i have to dodge a lot of bullets to stay ahead on the high side AND there is a good chance to split the pot. i would probably check-fold. that, or check-raise if i had a good read on the flop bettor -- specifically that he likes to lay down on the flop or only raises low hands. the A could have really screwed up a hand like A24. if the flop was a little different -- e.g., make the A into a 2 on the flop -- then I think you can look to put pressure on your opponents. anyway, my tendency is to check-fold.

on the turn, when the Q hits, broadway becomes possible. bluffing on occassion is doable, but what i really want to do is see the river cheaply and try to boat up. if i were last to act and was checked to, i would consider potting it. in ep, the bet and subsequent call give me little info.

on the river, i give it up. as i have mentioned before, i am VERY hesitant to make a move at a pot with three wheel cards on the board... esp. OOP. as such, i don't like the bet, and i HATE the call. you're slippin', dude.

overall, i think your hand had more potential than you seem to think. the problem is that you need a slightly less coordinated/scary board and only one opponent.

I remember when I though this game was easy and it seems like so long ago. Other bad session, where the only big pots I was in I was coin flipping (and I lost), and where nobody wanted to pay me off. The session was culminated by me mis-reading the board and at that point I decided it was stopping time. I haven’t done that in quite a while.

On a random site note, I don’t think that the party games are as good as they used to be. For the past 4 sessions I have been playing at table with average pots below 12 and average VP$IP below 40.

Hands: 149
Hours: 0.85
W/L: (41.84)
VP$IP: 16.11
W$SF: 21.05
WtSD: 23.68
W$SD: 44.44
PRF: 3.36
MTR: 3.33

When your biggest win of the session was $1 there is not much good to talk about.

IAmABuggyBot wins $3.05 from side pot #1 with two pairs, aces and threes.
IAmABuggyBot wins $8.20 from the main pot with two pairs, aces and threes.
There was no qualifying low hand.

This is the major difference I see between the $25 tables and the $100 tables; this hand never makes it to showdown at the $100 tables.

The bad was only winning 2/14 hands with A2. Those two hands netted me a total of $1.60 while I lost $14 with the other 12. Good times.
