Getting 3bet at with a meh holding...

Postby MVPSPORTS » Mon Dec 12, 2005 7:08 pm

I know I'm like a eunuch at a whorehouse with most of this limit crap, but I have a question that comes up fairly regularly...

Lets say, for instance, full ring 3/6 limit, I'm dealt [Ad] [Js] in LP... one limper to me, I raise, BB 3bets... At this point, I'm kinda stuck...

From my WORLDS of expertise, basically listening to Escape between fits of sodomizing a handful of parsley, I learned that you should NEVER coldcall a 3bet... If you're gonna call, you cap, or so he says...

So, is this a cappable hand...? If so, what do I do if a J flops... He bets out and I raise and he calls? He 3bets? Do I call down from there, praying he doesn' have an overpair...?

I can prolly think of a few more instances, but that one comes up more often than most...

I'm pretty sure when he says never cold call a 3 bet he's talking about when its 3 bet coming to you, not when you've made a bet and someone raises. That would make blind stealing from the button crazy. In that instance you can call the big blind's raise fine.

Well, this actually is a worthwhile topic. Against a single 3 bettor, ill usually cap it, only because if he has AQ or AK i dont want him to take the pot just because we both miss. Of course this endsup costing a shotload when you miss and he has JJ or QQ or something...ut but i hate the idea that a mizor with the same hand as me but better position will win the pot off me, so headsup i will usually cap, unless i think the guy is real tight and wouldnt threebet me without having me way beat, (as in TT+) in which case ill just check/fold the flop without even peeling one if i miss.

If the limper calls the threebet, then the pot becomes a three handed affair, and you need to actually hit something (presumably) since youve got a field of 2 other mizors you gotta beat. When escape sayas you cant coldcall a three bet, he probably means when you dont have chips in the pot already. If your the raisor, calling a threebet is pretty standard, i would think.

Anyways the OOP cap is an alright play against a mizorly opponent, especially when the pot is HU. But against a tight opponent and/or in a multiway pot, you are going to lose more than you win most likely if you capitup with marginal holdings.

So, what would you do in these 3 scenarios...

a. You call, flop a J, he bets you raise, he 3 bets...
b. You call, flop a J, he bets you raise, he call and leads a blank turn...
c. You call, flop an A, he bets, you raise, he 3bets...

When the A flops, are you in calldown mode, or raising? Same for the J? How worried are you that opponent has AK or AQ there, or a higher PP...

a. I will usually call the three bet and if the guys pretty legit i will muck UI if he bets the turn. Against a mizor i call forsheeze since he could have a lower PP. If he bets the river, i will muckit pretty often too, because most people check behind with a lower PP in that spot, and unless he was three betting you with KJ or another AJ, theres not alot hes going to value bet here that you can beat. Of course like i said, if the guys mizorly, then im not going anywhere with my hand, i dont care if a K and a Q fall on the turn and river.

If check calls and leads the turn i usually get suspicious enough that i call him down. I might raise him on the turn if he bet, then muckit to a threebet, and possibly take a free showdown if he calls and checks. That donkbet on the turn will usually arouse my suspicion enough that ill call.

If the A flops ill usually bet, and if he raises, ill threebet, then if he caps ill muckit if i dont hit on the turn. If he calls the threebet and raises the turn when i bet i will muckit also, but otherwise, unless he shows some pretty serious strength like that, i am going to keep on firing away.

Yep. That's why it says "cold call", which is slightly different than "call". But then again, no one calls MVP anyway, so I didn't expect him to understand cold calls.
