Question on live game against passive maniac

Postby Danhdan » Sun Jan 01, 2006 7:58 pm

I was playing in Nevada this weekend in a 2-6 spread limit hold'em game(you can bet and raise from 2-6 on every street). The blinds were 1/2 and the tight was a little tight except for one or two players. One player in particular was limping in every hand and also calling every PFR in any position. Any time he hit the board w/ a pair or he had a pair in hand he was betting and would call most of the time w/ nothing at all. He only raised once PF the whole night w/ AQ. He also bet at the board about 40% of the time when he had a weak draw and about 75% of the time he had position and no pair, no draw.

In this particular game, where if I bet at a board I can usually get heads up against this opponent, should I limp in to his blind w/ any playable hand for the $2 limp and try to catch or should I be patient and try to play w/ solid hands? At the time I was trying to stay in with him b/c of his capacity to bet w/ any pair. Just curious as to what people would think about staying in against this type of opponent and what type of hands they would raise against him and what type of hands they would call his bet.

I normally play more hands against guys like this, but its important to try and get heads up with him, which might be difficult because the lack of PF raising doesnt allow you to 3-bet and isolate. Also pretty soon everyone is going to catch on so you should keep an eye on that to make sure you dont turn into the second biggest fish at the table. I'd play my EP hands the same (or slightly tighter than normal if the rest of the table has loosened up), and get more aggressive with a wider range of hands in mid-late position if I feel I can get heads up or maybe 3-handed. Since its a spread limit game, you can probably also limp in with suited connectors etc on the cheap.

Postflop, I'd just play it simple. You're going to be paying off this guy a lot of the time when you make something like bottom pair or even with A-high. But if you push hands like TPGK and better (maybe even middle pair) aggressively you should come out on top. Always re-evaluate at the flop, and be willing to lay it down even if you think he's bluffing if you hand is pretty weak too and the pot is small. Basically don't get into a pissing contest. Just pick your spots and bet the hell out if it when you have a decent hand. Any other time just get out or try and keep the betting controlled.

And yeah, don't bother bluffing him unless the board is something real scary and/or you have a decent number of outs.

+ I also like check raising these guys. Do it every chance you get, even with draws sometimes. It should make him nervous enough to buy you a few free cards and also reduce the cost when your weak hand loses to a slighlty better weak hand.

++ Note that all this hyperaggressiveness is for when you get heads up with him. If the pot goes multiway, don't fall into the trap of ignoring your other opponents, especially if they're rock-like like you seem to be saying.

Some good information, thanks. I couldn't bluff him; I think he folded once every twenty hands before showdown...he just kept picking up small pots against the guys around me when they didn't hit and would fold to his bet plus the few hands he kept hitting.

I definitely agree w/ the hyperaggressive approach. It's just hard for me to move into the mode...usually TAG unless I am getting too much respect, but in LLHE that almost never happens.
