Mikos' Journal: WSOP Cash (525th) - now what?

Postby mikos » Mon Jan 02, 2006 10:49 pm

Hey all.

Been playing about 2.5 years now and last year was lucky enough to win a PokerStars $3 satellite to a $33 satellite for a seat in the WSOP main event. I wound up in the top 2 and both of us got seats.

Anyway, bought Harrington's Hold'em Volume 1 and played a few tourneys in AC to prep. Got out there, stayed tight, had a few gambles and placed 525th (just in the money). Anyway, needless to say I didn't have much of a clue of what I was doing. So here I am.

Trying to build an online bankroll and take a run at this (part-time of course).

Trying to document my learnings and thoughts here.

Comments welcome. Good luck all.

Would like to get some opinions on the below. I think I played this right as I made the standard continuation bet. On the re-raise I had a ton of outs and 4 to 1 pot odds. Thoughts?

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t150 (7 handed)

MP1 (t2405)
Hero (t2682)
CO (t1940)
Button (t2855)
SB (t1480)
BB (t1358)
UTG (t780)

Preflop: Hero is MP2 with [Ad], [Kd].
2 folds, Hero raises to t600, CO calls t600, 3 folds.

Flop: (t1425) [6d], [2s], [3d] (2 players)
Hero bets t450, CO raises to t1340, Hero calls t890.

Turn: (t4105) [9h] (2 players)

River: (t4105) [Jh] (2 players)

Final Pot: t4105

Well you didn't bet the flop very hard, I think a push is in call on the flop, you get some fold equity that way and since you're not going to fold to a reraise put the pressure on him.

yeah it's an easy call.

might be better of just moving allin yourself on the flop.

Your bet screamed weak there. You bet 600 preflop but only 450 on the flop? That more or less says to me, "I had a hand before the flop, but now my hand is pretty weak, I'm gonna bet and hope you didn't hit anything". If you bet 600 preflop, you should probably push right there. If you had decided to make it 450 (I tend to raise about that), then you could have made it 750 on the flop and actually scared someone away, or you could have even checked. That way, he might check and you can see what the next card is, or mayble he'll make a weak bet with a wussy hand, you can push, and he can fold.

I'm pretty wear of continuation bets these days, noone thinks you mean business unless you have all your chips in there.

A recent $15+1 Turbo SnG on PS

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t100 (7 handed)

BB (t1165)
Hero (t1730)
MP1 (t1815)
MP2 (t1805)
CO (t1245)
Button (t1405)
SB (t4335)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with [Kh], [Kd].
Hero raises to t300, 3 folds, Button calls t300, 2 folds.

Flop: (t750) [Ah], [7s], [7d] (2 players)
Hero bets t600, Button raises to t1105, Hero folds.

Final Pot: t2455

Obviously not a great flop for me. The $600 bet was probably silly as he was likely calling with an A. Thoughts?
