Player Notes

Postby Yearning » Sun Feb 05, 2006 6:51 am

Currently my player notes consist mainly along the lines of:

fish
calling station
holdem fish
bluffing lag
f*cking idiot retard

The amount and vehemence of profanities before the description is usually in direct correlation to the degree he sucked out on me at the time of the notation.

Obviously a more informative detailed system of cataloging key player traits and tendencies
is needed to correctly take proper lines in tight situations.

Does anyone here use a general system of notation on players habits?
U mess with the best, u get stacked like the rest.

No, my notes bare striking similarity to yours

Now and again if I see a player do something specific that I think might be of benefit i'll note it down - one example would be if I see a player in a PLO8 game put in pot bets to chase a low-only hand I'll put something like "call pot bets chasing low". Likewise, if I see a guy in PLO showdown a winner with 348T after calling a raise PF I'll put "plays any 4 cards even for raise" or something.

I'm not wildly keen on getting TOO specific about a player's habits in the notes as I think it can sometimes throw you - lots of people seem to vary their play a lot in omaha (more so than holdem) and so ascribing very specific behaviour to them can be misleading I think - it would be a no-no in my book to put something like "always smooth calls with top two" just because I saw a player smooth call with top two or "always slow plays top set" because some players seem to vary the way they play hands almost at a whim (although partly due to the conditions of the game as well). Knowing relatively rough attitudes of a player in certain situations can be useful though, so in the "slow playing of top set" situation I might put something like "capable of slow-playing then fast on turn" or something more general.

To be honest, I play mostly at cryptologic (probably about 60-75% of my table time) and the notes feature there is useless as there's 7 or 8 different sites and the notes don't transfer from one site to another (although I think there may be a method for doing this.. anybody know?). I note-take fairly regularly at party/prima though, and a good amount of it is stuff like "Fish" and "LAG".

Yeah, would be good. I do have PTO again but I don't use it whilst playing, it's more to keep tabs on my wins/losses and provide some info on opponents.

For PLO, the following player information is invaluable:

- on flop, turn, what does a small bet mean? For some players this means a weak made hand like two pair, and thus a "testing or blocking bet". For others it means a draw.
- on the river, how do they bet the nuts? Will they bluff when checked to? How large are their value bets?
- how do they play a made straight on the flop (with or without redraws)?
- how do they play weak trips on the flop?
- are they conservative or aggressive with low sets?
- do they fold second flushes to a massive raise or are they going to the felt?

My notations for PLO8 are as follows:

Solid - Understands the game
Decent -Understands the game, but not disciplined enough to do the right thing
Wingnut - No understanding of game. If you actually do something that makes me type this in then you are truly a moron.

At the PL O8 25 level, I dont think keeping notes on the dumb things that people do are worth it. Besides some of the things that I would type would be hard to believe given the stupidity of some of the players.

When I sit down at a full PL O8 25 table, I assume that there are three combined Solid/Decent players with the rest being some degree of wingnut.
