5 songs everyone should have...

Postby Felonius_Monk » Wed Feb 09, 2005 4:50 pm

OK here's an interesting idea. I'm always interested to get to know people a little bit through the music that does something for them. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes, some people go for some quite unusual/untypical things that sometimes says a bit about the sort of person they are... Anyways, I thought it might be fun if we all put down, not necessarily our favourite 5 songs, but a choice of 5 songs that have an interesting connotation, meaning, or just generally ones you think EVERYONE should have in their collection.

It would be very cool if, in a little while, somebody could go to winmx or whatever (not that I'm suggesting doing anything illegal :D make sure you pay for your music  ) and own their very own BTP soundtrack! Perhaps it could even improve your poker game....

Anyways, off the top of my head pretty much, here's my 5 in no particular order...

1) Joy Division, "Love Will Tear Us Apart".... Just the most viscerally brilliant 3 minutes of pop music ever written. Ian Curtis, the band's lead singer, killed himself tragically young, after a handful of releases of varying quality and occasionally unnerving brilliance. This was by a country mile the best thing they ever did, and british independent music has been trailing in the wake of this one ever since.

2) Richard Thompson, "1952 Vincent Black Lightning".... Wow, the best folk/country type song ever? It's a modern folk tale set to some of this most amazing finger picking you'll hear from a guitarist ever. It's also amazingly sad and uplifting at the same time. A mini-masterpiece. I saw him play this live once, playing both the ryhthm and lead guitar parts on the same accoustic and singing it, pretty amazing. It's astonishing this guy has never made it bigger in the UK, he doesnt take himself too seriously but it's no underestimation to say he's as talented as any musician these shores have ever produced.

3) John Lee Hooker "I Cover The Waterfront" (also known as "The Waterfront")... I'm a massive fan of blues music, and though John Lee Hooker isn't my favourite (Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy and BB King knock spots of just about everything else IMO, though I love tons of this sort fo stuff, in fact i've planned to write a book about it some time...) this song is still amazingly touching. Simple beyond belief, just the guy's voice with a few chords, but it just seems to me it's what music's all about. The reworking off his 90's album "Mr Lucky" features van morrison taking some of the singing, with even better effect.

4) Carly Simon "Nobody Does It Better" (Theme from The Spy Who Loved Me). This is just the coolest thing ever. The radiohead version also "rocks bells" (as a friend of mine is fond of saying). If anyone's seen the comedy show Alan Partridge they also pretty much have to love this song.... Nooooooboodyyy does it HALLLLFFFF AS GOOOOD AS YOOUUUU.....

5) Oysterband "The Shouting End Of Life".... Kinda uncool yet at the time the coolest, sh*t-kicking, drinking, hard-living song ever. "... Gunpowder, whiskey, falling off the wire/ anything could put me in that ever after choir/ Perhaps they wanna see me shuffle off the shelf/ So I hand them each a bottle and say, "Go f**k yourself..." he he he surely coolest lyrics ever :)

Your turn....

All of a sudden i'm slightly disappointed not to get "Growing on me" by the darkness, "Born Under a Bad Sign" by Albert King and "London Calling" by the clash in there to beef it up a bit :D he he well no-one's perfect...

Jeez. I'm no good at this top five stuff, but I'll have a go at a BTP soundtrack.

In no particular order.

* "Word Up" by Cameo
* "Hey Ya" by Outkast
* "Insane in the Brain" by Cypress Hill
* "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
* That techno track that was basically a takeoff of the pacman tune

So what does that say about me, Monky, eh? :D

I'm not sure how to answer this. So far, I have only HEARD of one of the songs listed by TUP or Monk (London Calling) so maybe I'm too young to answer this. Maybe I know the songs but don't know them by name, just if I heard them.

Either way, I like the idea but I don't think I can answer this.

1. Stairway to Heaven- Led Zepplin
2. The Gambler - Johhny Cash
3. Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers
4. Me against the world- Tupac
5. Tears in Heaven- Eric Clapton

Flopmyflush,

Good thing I've heard of Iron Maiden before or I wouldn't know which were the songs and which were the artists :)

Ok, I'll give this a shot anyway.

Foo Fighters - Everlong
Goo Goo Dolls - Iris
Incubus - Clean
Bad Religion - American Jesus
Disturbed - Down with the Sickness

And so TUP knows, the artists are on the left, song titles on the right. :D

Voodoo--Godsmack
Seven--Prince
Stranglehold--Ted Nugent
Aqualung--Jethro Tull
I'm Just A Sweet Transvestite--Rocky Horror Picture Show Soundtrack

And NO I'm not! Although that could explain why I only play online.

Post it, Texas :D

My favourite texas artists (that I know, anyhow) include Albert Collins, Blind Willie Johnson, oh and Lightin' Hopkins is OK too. I guess you haven't heard of them though :D the only well known one I like that I can think of is Stevie Ray Vaughan, he could really play guitar. His version of hendrix's voodoo chile is v good, but his best was maybe Texas Flood.
