I could be well ahead here or he could have caught up. How do you proceed?

I dont really see a good reason to bet out here. The only hand that call you here beats you, maybe a set calls hoping to boat up. My guess is you push $4 and he folds almost anything you beat and calls only with hand that you are now drawing dead to. Check behind on the turn and fold to any decent sized river bet.

I like to keep the pot small here so I'd check. If he has a set, so be it. By doing that you allow yourself to get to a showdown for the same price it'd have cost you to make a bet, which is advantageous regardless whether he has a flush or not. Might extract a river bluff too, which will get you a couple of bucks you'd have missed out on by betting the turn.
