now i was about 80% sure that the short stack had the nut flush. However, the other guy called so he didn't have it so i decided to just try to create a side pot so i could win some extra in case the shortie did have the nut flush.

Ok, this is unlikely to ever be a good move since that guy is now likely to fold his hand, even a lower flush unless he's a huge donk since i'm showing strength. anyone ever this this is a good move? Hell, i could actually be winning the main pot since its just a shortie who could have a crap hand.

No, I don't think the other guy is going to call a raise, given that you hold the cards for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th nut flush and the short stack according to your read has the nut.

The only time I ever like this play is if you are making it as a value play against the short stack, in which case I'd probably just raise 2. However, as you thought he had the nut flush anyway, you'd need a very specific set of circumstances (i.e. fairly sure shorty has the nut and the other guy is a VERY loose passive station) to make the raise for the sidepot.

Sometimes you can make good money by getting creative with sidepots, not sure this is one though.

On a related note, it is very important in PLO to watch out for flush hands where you also hold cards to 2nd and 3rd nut flushes, as they are BIG blockers to you getting paid (as to some extent your 3rd and 4th nut cards were here). I don't like AK suited much at all as a feature as you know if you make your flush the best anyone else can have is Q high, and above a certain level people don't call down big bets with such vulnerable hands.

yeah i didn't consider that when making the play. Would you consider doing it if you didn't have the Qd and Jd?

I guess, but you'd still need the other guy to be likely to call with a 3rd nut flush or worse, so you'd still need him to be pretty loose.

I guess with the added value of catching another 1.80 from the shorty if he DOESN'T have the nut flush, it might be a nice "either/or" play that carries a combined +EV.
