This is a hand reading quiz. I wasn't smart enough to figure out what he had but I think I should have.

Background. He is a mostly passive calling station. I have been destroying him because he doesn't know how to fold the 2nd (or 3rd, or 10th) best hand on the river. Example, I am IP with a 7 high flush. He checks to me I bet half the pot and he calls with top and middle pair. However, he is willing to lead with what he thinks is the best hand.

Two questions:
1) What do you think he has?
2) What is your play?

I think his river check almost surely is a sign of weakness. I agree with Kuso and would likely put him on 56xx and now he's skirred that you made a bigger straight. Against most opponent's I usually bet the river. He's probably calling most of the time and most of the time we're chopping. That's fine. I think a check-raise is very remote and I'll take some fold equity over letting the river go check-check and him winning half with some lame-ass low. If he's calling regardless, then I guess checking through is best since the only real upside to betting is the fold equity against a weak low.

Not 56.

He had JT for the same str8 as I did, but he had a low to go with it .

I don't think that he would lead the turn with any other hand. Remember I said he calls with marginal hands and bets with what he thinks is the best hand. On that board even he wasn't bad enough to think 56, or 2 pair + flush draw would be good.

In the hand I did bet the river which I think was a mistake. He was a calling station so I think he calls the river with almost anything that he calls the turn with so I think the off chance that he river a large str8 isn’t worth the small amount of fold equity I had.

I wouldn't have bet the river, I don't think. Very rare you see someone pump it on a re-raise on that board without some sort of low, and if he has a low he's calling anyhow. 56 is about the only thing that might consider dumping here if you bet (even that he might call if he's a station) to promote your hand into the full pot. Otherwise I just can't see a hand he can have that he'll fold to river pressure that he would've played this way.

His river check is horrible, semi-dependent on what his low was.
