"Sticky" strategy question

Postby Spirou » Wed May 16, 2007 12:11 am

Hi.

I posted this question in the sticky yesterday but I didn´t get any replies and I don´t know if anybody seen it, so I try to make a new tread instead. I´m kind of new to this so please bare with my stupid questions :oops: .

As I said, I´m quite new to playing SnG´s. I mostly play NLHE but I´m having a downswing so I try to play some other forms of poker.
I´ve played some 6max SnG´s at Pacific without any specific strategy at all besides being tight in the early rounds and to not call a raise with KJo or Ax.
Do you think that OP´s strategy (forum/viewtopic.php?t=4537) would be good at a 6max table where the blinds go up every 10:th hand and you have 1200 chips to start with? At Pacific the payout structure is 50, 30, 20 evan for the 6max tables and that makes you get your money back for 3:rd place.

Some results so far (I play on a very small buy-in to start with):

Pacific ($2.5/30c)
Played: 13
1:st: 2
2:nd: 3
3:rd: 4
4:th: 4
5:th: 0
6:th: 1

ITM: 69,2%
ROI: 11,3%

Greateful for any input

// Spirou

PS. I´ve played the $2.50 just to get a grip of it. I plan to move up to $5 or $10 as soon as I know that I have a decent ITM %. My question regarded the structure of 3 places paid and the blinds going up quite fast.

I don't play 6max SNGs so I havent studied them. With a 50/30/20 on 6-max, you really aren't getting your money back on 3rd place - you're losing out to the rake fee.

Early game should be about the same. I don't follow the sticky guidelines that much and there's too much involved with detailing out what to do early game. Basically, play hands with high implied odds for cheap, and build big pots with monster hands.

I dunno what else to say on it... when you have a short-ish stack of 12x BB or less, just make the standard +EV shoves. +EV shoves/calls are calculated with programs like SNG Wiz and SNG Power Tools - which IMO is the most important investment for any serious SNG player. Buy one of them, play around with it for a while, study it after every session and you'll reap the benefits quickly.

I guess the rake is pretty cheap on that site. You're right, you do gain 20cents from 3rd place.

The demo is just that - a demo. You would need to pay for the full version to play around with the program more. Download the trial of SNG-PT and go through the tutorials. If you still need clarification, feel free to ask.

Hi.

First of all:
EscapePlan: Thanks for your input. I will look in to SNGPT and see what I can find.

DaFish: Where can I find your ICM calculator? It´s probably OK for me to play SnG´s at Stars. I play at Pacific just because they are the only ones paying 3 places in 6 handed games and the players really sucks, at least at the lower levels.
Since I´ve been playing some LO8 at Stars I KNOW where to find the "fold" button :lol: .
What level do you think I should start playing at Stars. Is $3 OK or maybe $5? I would like to learn without risking too much money.

Thanks

// S

I've played quite a bit on the stars 9 and 6 handed games, i feel like the 6 handed games you can get away with alot more steals and since your hank rankings go up, it can mean that you can be loose but still take down alot of pots when you get to 3 or 4 handed. What I try and do (best case scenario) is get in with a big PP pre flop or a monster on the flop/turn and stack a donkey, then sit tight till it gets to 2 handed, hopefully you have enough of a stack to either push around the other two or wait for the blinds to make someone disparate.

I've never played with a payout structure of 50/30/20, but at this level i think if you're a decent player, it would probably be better to get 60/40 or whatever stars gives top 2 as opposed to making almost nothing in third. That said i believe i'm a decent heads up player and i'll win say 65-70% of the time i get heads up, even with a big chip disadvantage.

Ok, now that I think about it, it does sound silly. I shall revise. I admit that I can't say i've playing 1000 sng's at that level to give a definitive result, but i also believe that with even chips, i have an edge heads up, maybe 5-10%? does that sound more realistic?

Also getting it all in with AK vs 42 probably isn't the best example as it's still 60/40, if i get it in with say AK or AQ against A4/A5/A7/AT/QT etc. or when i have KQ against QJ or something like that, it would make my winrate better. I try to mostly outplay opponents post flop heads up.

The edge a good player has over a poor player increase exponentially the larger the stack sizes get. The opposite is of course also true.
