Learning PLO8 -$2 level

Postby briachek » Mon Apr 17, 2006 12:55 pm

well i was killing time last night and decide to learn some plo8 on the $2 on stars since its much cheaper to learn there than the $25 tables i initially tried. I def think I did much better this time. I won $2 in 30 min but had 2 mistakes for stacks so if i don't do that, its one hell of a winrate.

Here are some hands I want some comments on.

Hand 1- I like your call on the flop. You will never, ever, get someone to fold an 8 there, so you might as well wait to get your low before committing to it.

Hand 2 - looks fine but I'd probably pot that flop more often than not, although maybe not from the SB. For the most part, nut low draw with a pair is worth going to war with.

Hand 3 - I like it. Pot, pot, pot. You are probably quartering him if he calls the river, or taking it down because his frush draw missed.

jd, i understand your point for hand 2 which is what i did on hand 3. However, i have bottom pair on hand 2. You are willing to go to war with bottom pair and nut low draw?

Hand 1 just hurts my poor head. Best advice is don't f'kin play $2 PLO8...

Hand 2 you should really lead that flop IMO against decent players. You will often win uncontested (or get folks chasing bare A2's against you whilst your 6 holds surprisingly large high equity). Of course if you meet resistance you can re-evaluate. On the turn of course you're firing, on the river you need to check-call against all but the biggest ugly calling stations.

Hand 3 I normally lead but I like your line too. I'm sure it's all good at $2PLO8!

I haven't look at the other responses yet., so take these for what they're worth:

Hand 1

Not sure why you posted this. It's fine. If my position was different, I might consider raising this flop (depends on prior action). Regardless, fine as played.

Hand 2

I'd CR the flop -- that min bet is REALLY weak. you can bet just about any turn and be happy about it (value if a low hits, villain likely fold if any high hits).

Hand 3

Not sure why you posted this. It's fine.

ok, just read the comments.

bri, you have middle pair on hand 2. and yes, that's usually enough to go to war with. wheel, flush, and paired boards create a more complex decision process that depends on reads for me.

as for monks and JDs comments about leading the flop in hand 2, i somewhat disagree. a bare low will often just call. if you CR, however, you are putting them to a bigger decision, and you're announcing that they're probably going to have to play for their stack... or at least a big bet on the turn.

as for TGs comment about the river check call, i think this works really well at higher levels (looks like a busted low draw, so you can induce the bluff), but i don't think a lot of people have this move at the lower levels. if they have crap, they'll check behind. if they have anything worth showing down (even weak crap), they'll call but not bet. most of the microlimit players are either weak-tight or showdown monkeys with the occasional maniac thrown in.
