LO8 / PLO8?

Postby Anders » Fri Apr 21, 2006 5:10 am

Hi folks.

I'm thinking of picking up O8 more seriously. Just a simple question really. Would you recommend PLO8 or LO8 as a starting point? My background is strictly PLO and PLHE, the only time I do play limit is when i play HORSE mtts/sngs. (Don't know if this does matter).
How would the starting hand requirements differ? Aggresion?
Has anyone else made this transition and what did you find best?

Maybe this question is unanswerable, but I'll give it a shot anyway.

i'll give you my 2 cents worth, but please keep in mind that this is from someone with very little limit experience (in o8, that is), so it may not even be worth that.

- it's right to chase more in LO8... that is, you're getting the correct odds to do so.

- conversely, you often have to fold seemingly good draws because you're not getting the right odds to chase. this is esp. true in HU pots... doubly so if two or more to a low are out.

- you should usually chase nut hands in lo8, but this isn't necessarily the case if the opposition is stupid and/or weak.

- i recommend starting at LO8 just so you can see how hands develop.

- i actually recommend that you start with turbo o/8 and just play a lot of hands to get the experience. after you get a feel for how hands and boards develop, i'd go to real money games. limit or pl is your choice.

- people make bigger mistakes in plo8, so it tends to be more profitable.

- i hope you like playing on party and/or stars, as that's where most of the games are.

- be careful about low limit lo8 and plo8 tables during bonus periods. a lot of whores like to play these games during bonus periods, and otherwise loose tables become rock gardens.

Thanks for your feedback!

I have managed a whopping 900 hands PLO8 50 and around 500 LO8 2/4 and 3/6 and find initially that PLO8 a lot easier to play (might be my background experience) but I think LO8 actually is a more challenging and fun game (might be the novelty of limit). I think I'll give this an extended shot.

Since I come from PLO variance can't be very much worse, can it?

My head's still spinning from my -16 buyin downer in january =/. Not to turn this into a bad beat story but I can't imagine any form of O8 being worse.

I started at limit but now only play pot limit (last 80,000 hands). I think some of my limit experience still creeps in during pot limit. Pot limit is a gold mine where you can make some one pay for chasing lows and flushes, straights and all combinationations of idiocy in the right situation. Pot manipulation, agrression, postion are what makes it much more prOfitable than limit. oNCE i STARTED PLAYING pOT LIMIT i HAVE NVER HAD A DESIRE TO PLAY LIMIT AGAIN. I have actually plyed afew hands of limit recently just to mess around and the experience at pot limt helps where the reverse is not true.
