Flopped flush

Postby Nortonesque » Fri Jul 08, 2005 12:31 am

Button seems reasonable -- 20/9. What do you think of the flop, and what about the river?

Party Poker 2/4 Hold'em (9 handed)

Preflop: Hero is MP1 with [8s], [As].
UTG calls, UTG+1 calls, Hero calls, MP2 calls, 2 folds, Button calls, SB completes, BB checks.

Flop: (7 SB) [Qs], [Js], [Ks] (7 players)
SB bets, BB folds, UTG calls, UTG+1 folds, Hero calls, MP2 folds, Button raises, SB calls, UTG calls, Hero 3-bets, Button calls, SB calls, UTG calls.

Turn: (9.50 BB) [4d] (4 players)
SB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets, Button calls, SB calls, UTG calls.

River: (13.50 BB) [4s] (4 players)
SB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets, Button raises, SB folds, UTG folds, Hero calls.

Final Pot: 17.50 BB

Well, I wrote a long rambling reply that didn't seem to accomplish much, so I'll just give a summary. I think your call (rather than reraise) on the river is good. The way the hand played out makes it very hard to put him on a hand that beats you (because his only reasonable boat hands are KK-JJ and these should've been raised preflop)...and yet I have real trouble seeing him raise the river with any hand you beat other than a rather ridiculous bluff that won't call a reraise anyway. After the way you played the flop with the call-reraise, could anyone really be overzealous enough to raise the river with the Ts? Well, yes, I suppose I've seen stranger things...but it'd still shock me.

If I had to guess his hand, I'd go out on the proverbial limb and guess Ts9s.

No other takers? Anyway, I like my flop play on this hand but hate the river play. I was originally going to wait for the turn to raise, since the bettor was in EP and I was in LP, but the button threw a kink into my plans by raising. If I just call and go for the CR, then on the turn I run the risk of it checking around, which would be pretty disastrous. So it's probably best to maximize value on the flop, and hopefully tie some people to the pot.

On the river the board paired and when I got raised I thought "Crap, he's probably one of those people who doesn't raise JJ with a bunch of limpers." I really should have considered that he would make the play with the [Ts] as well, and JJ probably would have raised the turn. He turned over [Qd][Ts].

I don't like the call 3 bet on the flop because to anyone paying attention, this is an obvious flush that you were trying to trap. I would probably get greedy and just call 2 bets on the flop and go for a check raise of the button on the turn. The river, I can't really fault the bet/call raise line because you have the Ace and I find it hard to beleive someone would raise with the Ten there.

Hmm, I really don't like going for the CR on the turn here -- value-wise it would be pretty crappy if it checked around. I do agree that I'm giving my hand away (lots of awful players at this table though, as demonstrated by the 3 callers on the turn).
