Pick apart this KJo hand

Postby TightWad » Sun Sep 18, 2005 5:37 pm

Okay, quick backround. The CO who raises this hand raised last hand from the button, the SB 3-bet, he capped and took it down on the flop with a bet. This hand he raises again, and while I know that two hands does not a read make, I didn't think my 3-bet was too out of line. Folding would've been perfectly fine as well, OOP with $1 invested and a marginal hand...but I certainly am not one to cold-call a suspected steal raise out of the SB.

I'm posting this because I think my play was questionable on every street, excluding the flop (and even that is only straightforward because of my questionable preflop raise).

Party Poker 3/6 Hold'em (9 handed)

Preflop: TW is SB with [Kh], [Jc].
5 folds, CO raises, 1 fold, TW 3-bets, 1 fold, CO calls.

Flop: (7 SB) [Th], [5c], [8s] (2 players)
TW bets, CO calls.

Turn: (4.50 BB) [Qh] (2 players)
TW bets, CO raises, TW calls.

River: (8.50 BB) [Js] (2 players)
TW checks, CO bets, TW calls.

Final Pot: 10.50 BB

Results in white below:
TW has Kh Jc (one pair, jacks).
CO has Tc Td (three of a kind, tens).
Outcome: CO wins 10.50 BB.

PREFLOP : I already made my points above, feel free to argue them.

FLOP : Nothing too interesting, just a standard continuation bet.

TURN : Well, I pick up an OESD which is nice...but after his flop call, do you think I'm best off hitting it again, or checking to avoid paying 2 bets for my draw (as happened)?

RIVER : Is this crying call really worth making?

-TW

Unless someone is being a bit of a maniac, I'm more inclined to believe the second raise in a row. People usually don't steal light two hands consecutively, because they know other players are less likely to believe them. I think you'll find this is usually AT or better.

I definitely bet the turn, in case he has a lower pair, or is just being stubborn with AJ or maybe A9.

I think I fold the river. I can't really put him on a hand that you beat. He's got to think you have a piece of a QJT board.

First let me say Im just a poo flinger when it comes to blind defense, Im terrible.

I would have played it exactly the same way TW did except that I prob woulda bet out on the river just for kicks, then fold to a reraise. Sucks when someone hits their set on what appears to be a steal.
I do not think, therefore I am not.

I'm the last person to tell you not to three bet at times when someone continues to bust your blinds but this is a one time around trip where he has raised twice. You have a really shitty hand to get involved with here. Now if he pulls the same shit the next trip around then I start to play back at him somewhat but not here. I am also MUCH more likely to just let it go regardless if he is pounding my 1.00 small blind here rather than my 3.00 Big Blind. Also if I make that three bet I want some real shit cards not something that could well get me in trouble if he actually does have a hand and has me outkicked on my big cards if that makes sense.

Once you are in there I don't mind how you played it.

Hum...Yeah i dont mind the way you played it either. The river call is marginal, but certainly nor indefensible.

I think the most important thing to remember when you 3 bet out of the SB yeah, its a good move, as it gets you headsup with the raisor and increases your chances to win and your equity in the pot- however, since you are investing so much in the pot when you do this, you should be relatively sure you are against a mizorly steal attempt when you do it.

Things that indicate this are someone that constantly (once is not constantly!) leans on your blinds, someone who has been shown to be LAGgy already, and when the raise comes from the button. The further from the button the 'steal attempt' is, the less likely it is to be a mizorly attempt to gank the blinds. Granted the CO is still a steal position, and raises from the CO are not to be treated like a raise from MP for example, but its still not quite as suspect as the button raise.

All things considered, i think your move was marginal in terms of EV. If the guys a mizor, i like the move, but to 3bet a guy with KJo ya gotta be pretty sure hes tryin to mize on you. It sounds like you did it without that solid of a read. But in any case, im all about the SB three bet. If you are going to play from the SB, 3 betting is not a bad idea. The ever present question is 'do i play these cards?'

I think id probably at least complete against a possibly mizorly LP raise with KJo. However, the fact that the SB discount at 3/6 is not much of a discount at all is definitely to be considered. Lots of factors, so all in all, i say you certainly didnt play it BAD. It was a pretty close decition between doing what you did and mucking the hand.
