Crap Variance to Great Variance... ever see such a jump?

Some of you may recall me posting a thread a little over a month ago from me encountering absolutely awful variance at PP 1/2. You can re-read that bit .

Here's what it looked like:


Since then I was terrified of returning to 1/2! I knew the players there weren't any more skilled and I just was getting handed terrible variance. Still, look at how much I lost in such a small span of time! To say the least, my mind wasn't giving me any ease with playing 1/2 again.

The past couple weeks I've sucked it up and returned to 1/2. I still was a little cautious at first and playing slightly weaker than usual, but now I'm back in full force.


Have you ever seen such a tremendous leap in variance? Over 1200 hands I've nearly jumped from -11BB/100 (-$188) to break-even!

Anyone else have any similar experiences? I'm absolutely amazed at the change!

Wow, the worst I've had was -6BB/100 over 600 hands at 3/6 kill on UB. Is that amazing 10.77BB/100 a fluke?

Well, these are all some pretty smallish samples. After all, i was once a 60PTB/100 at $50NL after about 1600 hands and I believe my lifetime rate now stands around -30PTB/100 (after about 1630 hands)

True, all of them are small samples. But still... variance is crazy, man.

I'm not sure anyone knows that better than me. Then again, reckless play does beget alot of variance, so I guess I would know, huh.

I shouldn't be winning 61% at SD. And this is counting all those questionable calls I've made which Tib despises

So are my .5/1 stats a fluke? Probably, yeah. Wait another 10k hands and we'll see.

10-11BB/100 isn't a sustainable winrate at $.50/1. For a pretty good player, 4-5BB/100 might be.
