I'm a very inexperienced player, and I'm sure you already thought of this. With the exception of your small blind all your early position numbers are pretty bad. I've been having this problem too (my small blind is far worse though), and I noticed that often if I don't hit the flop I'll just check against one or two opponents and fold to his late position bet. This is probably terribly weak tight and observant players will do it to you repeatedly. Your high (i think it's high) fold on the flop% compared to fold on the turn% supports that theory. I'm starting to look more at the AF of a late position bettor, and if he's aggro, I try to raise him, even if I only have some kind of draw.[/list]

You're supposed to fold more on the flop than other streets. There's nothing unusual about his numbers there. You should be giving up many hands on the flop, especially when drawing without the correct odds.

hackerrus: You definitely have some poker player savvy in ya, beginner or not! When your in the blind and its say, 3 handed to the flop or something and you flop, say an openended straight draw, or even a gutshot, alot of the time its a good idea to checkraise the late position bettor, and fire into him on the turn. I mean, if the flop is 238 and youve got 45 lets say, and you check it to an LP limper who bets, think about it- what the hell part of that board could he possibly have? A8 MAYBE, other than that, hes just trying to pickup the pot. Raising in these situations with nothing at all is not even a bad move, but its usually best to be at least semi-bluffing with some sort of hand that has some outs, just in case you actually are up against a real hand.

Keep on defending them blinds, they add up!

Well,

First off thanks to everyone who took the time to reply, I did quite a bit of analysis using my PT dbase. I read a couple posts about blind defense, played a few more hands, only played 3 tables which stayed above 20% VP$IP, and really tried to implement mecos advise.

Last night I played a marathon, well it would be a short session to mecos but 1450 hands is a monster for me. I immediately dumped $250 mostly into very aggressive BB defense, see the following attempts.

Party Poker 3/6 Hold'em (7 handed)

Preflop: Hero is BB with [7s], [5c].
3 folds, CO calls, 1 fold, SB completes, Hero checks.

Flop: (3 SB) [3h], [Th], [5d] (3 players)
SB checks, Hero checks, CO bets, SB folds, Hero raises, CO calls.

Turn: (3.50 BB) [5h] (2 players)
Hero bets, CO calls.

River: (5.50 BB) [8h] (2 players)
Hero bets, CO calls.

Final Pot: 7.50 BB

Results in white below:
CO has 2h 2s (flush, ten high).
Hero has 7s 5c (three of a kind, fives).
Outcome: CO wins 7.50 BB.

OK, that guy is calling me down no matter what, first with the underpair, then with the lowest possible flush.

But then it started to work

Party Poker 3/6 Hold'em (10 handed)

Preflop: Hero is BB with [7s], [Ac]. CO posts a blind of $3.
6 folds, CO (poster) checks, Button raises, 1 fold, Hero calls, CO calls.

Flop: (6.33 SB) [3s], [Jd], [6s] (3 players)
Hero checks, CO checks, Button bets, Hero raises, CO folds, Button folds.

Final Pot: 4.66 BB

Results in white below:
No showdown. Hero wins 4.66 BB.

Alright, that check raise move actually does work.

and another

Party Poker 3/6 Hold'em (7 handed)

Preflop: Hero is BB with [Kd], [2s].
UTG calls, 3 folds, Button raises, 1 fold, Hero calls, UTG calls.

Flop: (6.33 SB) [Jc], [Ks], [4h] (3 players)
Hero checks, UTG checks, Button bets, Hero raises, UTG folds, Button calls.

Turn: (5.16 BB) [3c] (2 players)
Hero bets, Button folds.

Final Pot: 6.16 BB

Results in white below:
No showdown. Hero wins 6.16 BB.

Check raised here with a weak made hand and he crumbled. My new friend is the BB defense check raise. Thanks to Piers and Mecos.

In the end I played 15%VP$IP which was definately a struggle. It just felt so wrong raising from late middle position with KTo and AJo, two hands I almost never play regardless of position but if I was first in at late middle position or later I would open raise a few more hands.

In the end I recovered necely for a +1.42 BB/100 session so I even took Escape9's advice.

Glad the defenses are working for you but I will say this. Do not get into the habit of defending with your garbage against more than 1 person. In two of those cases above there was a third person involved and for me at least that changes my whole attitude toward defense. When another person besides the raiser is involved I need a pretty damn good hand to call a raise with.
