Whoops! Overplaying my trips (humiliating posts are fun)

Postby EscapePlan9 » Tue Oct 11, 2005 12:32 pm

I thought I got this overplaying out of my system from a couple sessions ago, but here we go again. I figure publicly humiliating myself is a good way to remind myself to stop overplaying my trips (thanks for the idea MVP).

Borderline pre-flop call. I would only call here to defend my blind, or if there's a bunch of other callers. I really wish one more player came along for the ride here. Ah well.

Easy peel on the flop. Easy lead on the turn. When raised, I 3-bet hoping he had AK. His cap should have told me I'm probably behind to AA or KK. Leading the river was me hoping he had AK still. Thankfully I didn't cap the river at least!

I'm curious how you guys would have played this turn. I wanted to trap the field for a bunch of bets with my trips here, so I believe leading out was the right play. Check-raising it would isolate me when I'm the likely favorite. I'd rather gain everyone else's bets. But would you 3-bet it? Fold to a cap? I know I definitely should have check-called the river when he capped the turn.

Thankfully I didn't make many more egregious errors today's session. I was up 5.5 BB at the end. For those unaware, EmpirePoker has a bonus from today (11th) onto the 13th. You must play 1000 raked hands using the bonus code PLAYOCT, 100% up to $100.

Party Poker 1/2 Hold'em (6 max, 6 handed)

Preflop: Hero is BB with [8h], [5h].
UTG calls, MP calls, CO raises, 2 folds, Hero calls, UTG calls, MP calls.

Flop: (8.50 SB) [Kh], [8d], [Ad] (4 players)
Hero checks, UTG checks, MP checks, CO bets, Hero calls, UTG calls, MP calls.

Turn: (6.25 BB) [8c] (4 players)
Hero bets, UTG calls, MP calls, CO raises, Hero 3-bets, UTG calls, MP folds, CO caps, Hero calls, UTG calls.

River: (19.25 BB) [9c] (3 players)
Hero bets, UTG calls, CO raises, Hero calls, UTG calls.

Final Pot: 25.25 BB

Results in white below:
Hero has 8h 5h (three of a kind, eights).
UTG has 4d Kc (two pair, kings and eights).
CO has Kd Ks (full house, kings full of eights).
Outcome: CO wins 25.25 BB.

Stickdude, you're misunderstanding. I did not call the flop thinking I was ahead. I called the flop because I had the odds to continue drawing (trips, two-pair, and backdoor flush draw). Folding when you have the odds to continue is losing money.

This is 6-max here. I would have raised A2s-AQs, AT-AQ, KTs-KQs, KJ-KQ, 99-QQ, and numerous other hands when at the CO. Yes, it's likely I'm behind, but that's irrelevant. There's no reason to believe he has AA, AK or KK already. In the majority of cases, I would be drawing to clean outs here.

well i didn't realize it was a 6 max table. In that case, the flop call is alright, i'm still not happy with it but its one of those thinks that has to be done. I still stand by the preflop call being marginal (unless you are MK than you 3 bet!) and the turn action should slow you down unless you know he his a known overplayer.

Escapeplan:

You said: "Given 9:1 on the flop, it's an easy call with my trip outs, two pair outs, and backdoor flush draw. With both the A and K out there, it's less likely he holds exactly AA, KK, or AK. I didn't call the flop because I thought I was ahead. He could easily be raising with AQ or AJ, or even KQ or KJ. If I didn't catch an 8, 5, or heart on the turn, I'd fold."
The flop call is more complicated than just saying you are getting 9:1 to call with 6 outs (1 for BDflush draw)to improve.

--The board is 2 tone, so 2 of your six potential outs must be discounted, and even if those 2 outs are clean, it will often set up a strong redraw.

--While you can't always fear AA,KK, or AK in this spot, you cannot dismiss them. A not insignificant percentage of the time you are drawing to running hearts.

--Even if you are drawing live against a Ace (or a K) and hit, those hands are going to outdraw you on the river fairly often (usually 8 outs)

--If you hit a non diamont 5 or 8, you can still be outdrawn by a flush draw.

--you are not closing the action, and it would suck to get raised behind you.

There are a lot of negative factors to consider before peeling in this spot. I would like a premium to proceed and I don't think 9:1 is enough.

Now that I look at this again, I think you have even less outs than that. Since the flop had 2 diamonds in it, the 5 of diamonds could complete a flush for someone. That would still give you a river redraw to a full house, but that would be what, 4 outs at that point?

EscapePlan,
I understand you are getting 9:1 on the flop, but there is also the possibility that you could have been caught up in a check raise from one of the two late position players. I personally don't think you caught enough of this flop to continue with the hand. If you flopped a 4-flush along with your paired 8 or the board was less coordinated then perhaps peeling one off might have been ok. Dunno, maybe I'm too tight here.
