Flopped a set, but ....

Postby stickdude » Fri Oct 21, 2005 6:47 pm

Villian here is pretty aggressive, especially for these Party Beginner tables.

Party Poker 0.15/0.30 Hold'em (10 handed)

Preflop: Hero is MP3 with [6s], [6h].
UTG calls, 4 folds, Hero calls, 1 fold, Button =#A500AF(Villian)/ raises, 1 fold, BB calls, UTG calls, Hero calls.

Flop: (8.46 SB) [As], [4h], [6c] (4 players)
BB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets, Villian raises, BB calls, UTG folds, Hero calls.

I make my set, but the pre-flop raiser raises again...

Turn: (7.23 BB) [Th] (3 players)
BB checks, Hero checks, Villian bets, BB calls, Hero calls.

I decide after the turn that if he has pocket Aces, I'll be paying him off, but I didn't see any reason to fold here. There are plenty of other hands that he could be aggressive with here.

River: (10.23 BB) [7c] (3 players)
BB checks, Hero checks, Villian bets, BB calls, Hero calls.

Another check/call to finish things up.

Final Pot: 13.23 BB

Anything I should have done differently here?

I think you're playing too weak here. The ONLY hand that beats you is AA, whereas you beat AK, AQ, AJ, AT, KK, QQ, and any other weird hand he might have. I call his re-raise on the flop and go for the checkraise on the turn.
Poker is silly.

It is not enough to be good at chess, you must also play well.

Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win.

Um... when you hit a set, you should be pushing it like hell. The flop call is ok, provided you want to check raise. Sure - he might have AA, but you shouldnt be worrying about that until he represents AA. In this particular betting pattern, 9 out of 10 times he'll have A,good kicker. If there was a 3-bet preflop, I'd still go ahead and check raise. You don't want to be wary of AA unless he gives you a very good reason to.

Bottom line - when your sets get beat, you should lose a lot. Otherwise you arent playing them right.

Ok, is this better? Granted, the set of kings is a little more secure than a set of sixes, but this one was a ride!

Party Poker 0.15/0.30 Hold'em (10 handed)

Preflop: Hero is MP2 with [Kh], [Ks]. Hero posts a blind of $0.22.
UTG calls, 1 fold, UTG+2 calls, 1 fold, Hero (poster) raises, MP3 calls, 2 folds, SB calls, BB calls, UTG calls, UTG+2 calls.

6 callers on a raise? Let the fun begin!

Flop: (12.46 SB) [3c], [Kd], [7s] (6 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG checks, UTG+2 checks, Hero checks, MP3 bets, SB calls, BB folds, UTG folds, UTG+2 calls, Hero raises, MP3 3-bets, SB calls, UTG+2 folds, Hero caps, MP3 calls, SB calls.

Turn: (12.73 BB) [Ah] (3 players)
SB checks, Hero checks, MP3 bets, SB calls, Hero raises, MP3 3-bets, SB caps, Hero calls, MP3 calls.

River: (24.73 BB) [4s] (3 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, MP3 raises, SB 3-bets, Hero calls, MP3 caps, SB calls, Hero calls.

Final Pot: 36.73 BB

This was definitely "win a lot or lose a lot" hand...

Yup, much better. It's obvious the MP3 has a Kx hand, or a lower set, or 2-pair.

SB obviously have Ax hand since he seems to wake up with the Ace on the turn.

Looks like you won this nice pot, am I correct? The only possible way for someone to beat you here is if someone has AA or 56. I see no evidence someone was holding AA unless the SB was slowplaying it the whole time and I seriously doubt anyone will call all the raises with 56 until the river.

I like the last one. No one suddenly came alive at the river, so it's unlikely anyone completed their straight. And due to the lack of pre-flop action, your set of kings is going to win over 90% of the time on that river.
