New to PLO - When to move up?

Postby emmasdad » Mon Mar 20, 2006 1:44 pm

I have been playing PLO for about 3 weeks off and on at the 25s at Bodog, Party and Stars. I have about 50 table hours and am up 10.5 buy-ins. My thoughts are to buy PTO (I have not yet reached 1000 hands in the trial download, playing mostly at Bodog) and move up to the 50s. It has been posted here that the 50s are not much different than the 25s. What is a good number of buy-ins for PLO before moving up? My BR can handle the 50s with no problem. How much success would I need at the 50s to move up to the 100s? 10k hands? 20 buy-ins? ptBB/100 of greater than 10? Just a general feeling that I am molesting the game? This game seems to have less variance than limit holdem, which is the game I usually play, and PLO, at least at the 25s, is inhabited by donkeys, where LHE is more of a grind at the 2/4 and 3/6 games that I have been playing, and I have been having some big swings.

Thanks for any thoughts.

to be honest, the games seem to play the same but i had marginal success at the 50's while i killed the 25's and now the 100's.

I don't think you should move up until you have at least 10,000 hands at the 25's with consistent success and then 20x buy ins for the 50's, IMO.

As long as the real dollars aren't bothering you, I'd be much more aggressive in terms of moving up--also if you feel comfortable at the game.

I'm willing to move up if I have netted at least 2 buy-ins for the bigger game at the lower level--for example, you're up $200 at the $50 level, then try the $100, etc.

Then, you absolutely don't lose more than 2 buy-ins at the bigger game. If you get stacked once, you can rebuy, but you don't rebuy after that (and if you keep bleeding down, just move back down).

Anyhow, once you move back down, then you again have to be up 2 buy-ins, but now counting the losses at the bigger game.

So, say you moved up to $100 and lost $150 before moving back down. Ok, now you're just up $50 at the lower level. So, you have to make another $150 before trying again.

I wouln't view this as a "formula" exactly, because I also think a feel for how you're really doing in the game is important as well as the bankroll. You need to feel like the field is not particularly strong, too.

I, too, appreciate the input and advice on this subject. I made a similar post last week and through the encouagement from the forum I've stepped up a level, too. Of course I don't have a lot of hands to go on yet, but I feel like I'm making out pretty decent.

I'm still very new to Omaha and Omaha8 but I'm finding you guys a huge asset. I hope in the future I can be a better contributor and just ask questions all the time!
