If variance is getting to you, I would play more FR. Optimal 6max strat includes considerably more high variance moves than in FR. I played 6max for quite a while, almost so long that I forgot how to play FR. The variance was pretty big and I often tilted, although I was a winning player.
Since I have gotten back to FR, I've had so much more fun playing poker. The last 70k or so hands I've been doing in FR have been practically tilt free. My biggest downswing has been 6 buy ins, which put some heat on me cause it happened just as I moved up levels, but it was followed by a well deserved rush. Now when a donk stacks me with a rivered 2 outer when all in, I laugh, reload before the next hand starts, and forget about it.
I dont think I'm ever gonna go back to SH unless I am eventually forced to do (in the distant future) so due to lack of high stakes FR games. In FR you dont have to play trash hands, if you got a cold deck just wait it out.
Outplaying weak players is easier when you can continuously take advantage of position and better hands. In SH you gotta raise AQ UTG and when a 60/40 donk calls you with 58s and its gonna be a tricky hand cause he will have position on you. In FR I muck it without a second thought and wait for a spot where I either have a better hand or a better position.
