- poker games (mostly goofy stuff, but some real poker) in HS.
- a little more poker in college (1988 to 1992) and afterwards. i did well, but i was playing against poker idiots.
- my dad died at a poker table last year, and i decided to learn poker seriously. one dude said that he ran money from freerolls into a $2k BR, and i decided that i'd do the same for my "learning process". i'm proud to say that i've never put a penny of my own money into play (i did make max deposits of my own money for bonuses. it never saw the tables.).
- lots and lots of freerolls at pokerchamps until i hit $5.
- cashed in first two $1 MTTs at pokerchamps. sadly they don't seem to have these any more.
- from there i went to $2 NLHE. iirc, i ran it up to $31 or so.
- i then found instantbankroll.com and party nlhe. i basically broke even and got the $100 (i think i actually ended up losing $3 or so at poker).
- i hated party nlhe (i didn't realize i was playing during weak-tight "bonus time"), and i somehow miraculously stumbled across BTP and Monk's plo8 articles. i then played 25plo8 for a while.
- i then moved up to 50plo8 and 100plo8 pretty quickly after building up the BR to over $2k (a lot from bonuses). i had observed a lot of the games and found them fishy.
- late last year and early this year i play a lot of microlimit and low limit HU and SH LHE. i learned a lot, but i realized that limit sucks even if you're good. i earned some money, but not enough to really take note of due to the small stakes and the limited amount of playing time.
- i played 25 to 100 plo8 earlier this year after my return from lhe. i soon moved up to 200plo8.
- i'm currently playing anywhere between 25plo8 and 400plo8 (200plo8 level for my "project"). i expect to be taking a shot at the 1000s in a couple of weeks (i.e., the end of this semester).
- i should add two disclaimers. first, my poker playing is quite sporadic -- sometimes i'm REALLY busy and have no time to play, and other times i have a ton of time to play. second, the levels i have mentioned are the highest levels i was playing at that time. if a lower level looked good and/or the higher level looked bad, i played the lower level. game selection is key, and i recommend that others take this approach (assuming they can take the lower level games seriously).
