My first impression midway through this book is that a lot of the games S is describing are not similar to internet games. Apply his ideas very carefully.

Preface: Your Mileage May Vary. This Is Just My Opinion.

Okay, I've read this book through twice now. What it has accomplished is the complete destruction of my game. Over the past month I've managed to donk off around $3000, first playing 2/4, then 1/2, and finally nl100 6Max. By trying to apply the principles in the book honestly and to the best of my ability, in many different types of (6max NLHE on Stars and Party) games, I have simply come to the conclusion that NL games populated by the experts Sklansky is writing about are so incredibly different than the games you find at middle and low limit on the internet that the advice on its face isn't even worth reading. That is, you'll have to adjust the teaching you get in such an extreme fashion to apply it properly TO SMALL STAKES 6MAX INTERNET NLHE that it probably isn't worth the pain to do it in the first place.

I appreciate that such a statement is likely to bring the fanboys howling out of the background to tell me I'm ignorant. But my core point here is that a winning player could well be better off learning the sophisticated stuff the hard way, and only winning a smaller amount along the way. Reading this book is -ev unless you already have the concepts within it fully assimilated, or you are such a beginner that really any advice will help your game, or the games you play in happen to map well to the ones used as a basis for the book's discourse.

Thankfully, my roll and sanity have remained fairly intact, and I have the ship righted, I think. I even regularly apply different ideas the book is talking about on my tables. But if someone had told me it was going to take a month and $3k to understand it well, I'd have just taken a pass.

Interestingly, my tournament performance has improved slightly over the period. Perhaps those games map better because the participants are under such pressure to accumulate chips, and there are less pathological nutminers to contend with.

I don't know if this was stated before but most of the examples he mentions are DEEP STACK cash games. Everyone play 100bb stacked games where its not that big of a sin to go broke with the 2nd nut or an overpair or blah blah blah. The fact is people don't know how to play deep stack poker; I for one don't. Put 500+ big blinds in front of everyone the play becomes COMPLETELY different. 3 betting hand ranges now include T9s. Deception becomes THAT much more important; if a player can put you on a range of hands repeatedly you aren't going to beat that game. 100bb SHNLE is COMPLETELY different from the examples in this book. (low stakes)

I think this book is great if I ever find a 1/2NL game with a max of $800. Besides that the fundamentals are what any low limit grinder already knows. So until I'm a balla I won't pick this up again.

So what level do your think NLHTP would be helpful? 200NL? 400NL? Or higher than that even?

I have no idea because I've never played those levels.

I'm not picking on this book in particular. I'm talking in general here.
