So I played in my first PLO8 MTT tourney last night on PokerRoom. I ended up winning it, and definitely got very lucky, but let me lay out my strategy and get some comments.
1) I stayed out of raised pots with only low draws. It seems to me a lot of people call raises with naked low hands, and then give up if the flop is high.
2) Conversely I tried to raise from middle and late position with High-only hands like big pairs and high wraps to isolate low players. This tended to work out, as on high only flops I could often take down a nice pot with a CB.
3) I called a lot of raises in late position, even with marginal holdings. Again people seemed to raise low-only hands like A2xx a lot, so with position and a high flop I could take down these pots as well with a strong semi-blluff
4) Called several players down in position with high-only hands. It seems that some people like to bluff at low draws. I took down a couple of nice pots just calling to the river with marginal holdings like two-pair or bottom set. This only really worked heads up though.
5) I limped with A2xx, A3xx or even 234x type hands in unraised pots. I often ended up folding these on mediocre flops and I think I only saw one or two low-only hands to the river.
6) It seems to me this game seriously favors the big stacks. I tried not to get involved with other big stacks once I was in the top 3 chip lead or so, preferring instead to apply pressure to the small stacks. Heads up against a raise you almost have to call with a decent stack against a small stack PF. I took a bunch of guys out with very marginal holdings simply by playing pot odds.
7) I got very lucky. When it was down to 3 I won a couple of all-in pf hands simply by outdrawing my opponents.
Anyone else played these tourneys, have thoughts, etc?Statistics: Posted by devilmollusk — Fri May 05, 2006 1:46 pm
