I wouldn't have had him on that, but then again he did give you ample odds to continue. I think once he makes this raise he's unlikely to release his hand though (it's either a monster or a big draw, or, errmm, bottom set lol) so in most situations where that occurs you'd be better off just calling along.
This does bring up one important point though - it's very important to run lots of hand simulations to get a good feel for the game. Having run some stuff through two dimes you now have a better knowledge of the odds involved in some possible situations on that board, which will, in future, make you money. Keep it up, thinking about the game and learning about the underlying odds and mathematics will make you get better and better!
