The first hand I did fold so I never saw what he had. Hard to believe I was winning there though.

Second hand I checked and he checked behind. The river was another 8, which was horrible for me. I thought he may well have AA from what i'd seen of him so far. I couldn't see how I could bet the river - it would basically be a bluff and I didn't think he'd fold - so I checked, he bet a fairly large amount and I had to fold.

That looks like a FD that hit and wants to get paid off. Puke and fold.

Hand 2:
Check and see what happens. Most likely I fold to a bet unless the opponent is bluffy. If he checks behind I lead almost all rivers.

Hand 2: Tough one here. I prolly check and see what he does. This is really read dependant do you have any kind of read on player, if he is a rock I think you have to fold to a pot bet.

Hand 2: There's exactly one pot bet left; flop play is a bit ambiguous. If he has a straight then it's hard to understand why he didn't push the flop with these stack sizes, but he may want to "wait for the safe turn" even though that seems suboptimal to me, unless he thinks you're currently splitting and wants to keep options for the turn.

Based on odds alone he cannot call your raise with a set or with a flush draw. So: he is either unaware of odds (possible, but real calling stations don't tend to lead out with draws) or he thinks that he has enough implied odds (you tell me) or he is sophisticated and knows that, in addition to his real outs he has bluffing outs. Given that he's playing short, I doubt he's that sophisticated.

Against an unknown I think I prefer a check here. If he pushes, I would be more inclined to call, since most people would milk a boat more. If he checks behind and the river is a brick, I would probably bet small and fold to a raise.

Difficult hand because in order to play optimally you really have to know your opponent.
I can easily imagine opponents against which you have to push this turn or check-call a push, if only to prevent them to try to outplay you too often.
