Right. They're in a raise or fold situation, as it were.

I just had this weird thought. I'll throw it out there and let you all crucify me for being such a dunce.

What about a minimum bet to induce a bluff on the river?

Exact same situation as above, but now you have position on the other guy. You are pretty sure you have the hand won. You would love to check to try to induce a bluff, but you are last to act. He checks to you. You think a value bet probably won't milk any more $$ out of him. So you put in a very very small bet, even a minimum bet (say $1.00 into a $50 pot) -- trying to look weak while also giving him another chance to act. You're hoping that he smells weakness in your pathetic bet and makes a bluff at the pot.

If he's on a busted draw he doesn't want to call any bet, but how can anybody fold for $1.00? And then if he's calling, why not bluff?

Theory: Give bad players as many chances as possible to make mistakes.

Stupid idea? Thoughts?

I think a lot of it refers to the notion that "the only hand that will call you is a better hand", otherwise they will fold to a river value bet.

consider this situation, say you have AA, the flop is 65J, 2 clubs, u raised the pot PF, now u bet the pot and get called on the flop. 2 of spades on the turn, you bet 3/4 pot, he calls again. then the 5 pairs on the river, no club. you check to him, to make it look like you were betting on the draw, wanting him to go away, now all of a sudden he thinks his AJ is good, so he decides to bet or overbet the pot.

Is that a situation you would check and call the river?

I'd probably reraise...I mean..you have two aces of the same suit. you have the best overpair and a possible double nut flush draw!! And everyone knows a double nut flush gives you 3x the normal pot!!!

All kidding aside..I agree with suhleaf. I've saved a lot of money since i've started folding connectors and suited Axs to decent sized raises.

I love the check on the river BTW.
