Do you have odds that perhaps he doesn't have a set so its worth it to call? Yeah, maybe. But when you do that, its basically like short selling the stock of a company you work for. You are betting against yourself. You're saying, "My poker gut says X, but I'm going to bet against my better senses because of pot odds."
It might be EV to do so, but what happens after this hand, and he has a set just as you thought. You sit there and feel silly for calling. Does that affect your game even just a litte? It does mine.
What about the opposite? You fold, and he shows the set. Don't you feel a little more powerful and your reads are even stronger. That has to help long-term.
