However, I can see him folding here for a number of reasons:
1. If he calls and loses he's sitting with 9k - with a 2k blind coming next hand.
2. If he folds, he's at 24k and still strong enough to last through the blinds
3. If he calls and wins, he's got 58k and is still 4th in chips at the table.
As to him holding AK - I suppose he might not have had it - its what he claimed to have. I guess when I read the situation - that's what I put him on - but regardless, it felt to me that the only way he could call would be with AA, KK or one of the other 2 sets (two pair were unlikely at best for him). With AK - I suppose it depends on the player, but I think I'm about 50/50 in this situation against most opponents given how close we were to the money line.
