KQ hand

Postby Nortonesque » Wed Mar 16, 2005 4:11 pm

Here's a crypto hand from memory that was pretty interesting.

SB is a calling station and will call 1 bet to see the turn on most hands. UTG is TAGish, with 18% VP$IP and 5%PFR, and he might be a little too aggressive post flop (3.75 PFA).

Hero is in CO with [Ks][Qd].
SB posts $.50
BB posts $1

Preflop:
UTG calls $1, 5 folds, Hero raises $2, Button calls $2, SB calls $1.50, BB calls $1, UTG calls $1.

Flop (10 sb): [7s][6s][6c]
SB checks, BB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets $1, Button folds, SB calls $1, UTG raises $2, Hero raises $2, SB folds, UTG caps $2, Hero calls $1.

Turn (9.5 bb): [2s]
UTG checks, Hero checks.

River (9.5 bb): [Js]
UTG checks, Hero bets $2, UTG calls $2.

Result:
Hero has a flush, king high
UTG mucks
Hero wins 11.5 bb

What do you think?

Nawton,

What range of hands did you put UTG on? I'm guessing something like 88-TT, in which case I like your flop 3-bet. I assume your intent was to narrow the field to just you and UTG, and take a free card on the turn (unless you hit a K or Q). My first thought was that 3-betting seemed a bit overly-aggressive, but the more I think about it, the more I like it.

I think you played this too aggressively postflop. If the UTG is TAGish, he was likely limping with a pocket pair because otherwise he would raise or fold. On the flop, all you can beat is a bad bluff because even if he has AJ or something, he is winning but you may get him to fold. On the turn, I like the check because after he caps the flop, I don't think you can bluff him out so you might as well try to catch your flush.

I think that flop play will usually lose you money and you got lucky this time. I'm 50/50 on calling the cr and looking for a good turn card. once the flush hits, and you just called his cr, he might check the turn anyway and you can see the river even cheaper.

Tighty nailed my thinking exactly. (BTW, how exactly did you get the "Forum Jackass" title?).

Normally I wouldn't bet out against 4 opponents after missing, but that flop probably didn't hit anyone, and there are a lot of bets in the pot. I felt there was a good chance everyone but the SB would fold, as they were all capable.

When UTG check-raises I put him on 88-TT. These are the hands he's most likely to have limped with UTG and now be check raising. He could have 77 here, but I think he's more likely to wait for the turn to bet the flopped boat. There's also a small chance he could be bluffing, hoping I'll lay down overcards. While there are plenty of bets to make the call, I like going for the free card because you also charge the SB.

Unfortunately the free card play didn't work, as UTG caps it. Now I have to see 77 as a greater possibility for him, or maybe something like limping with a big pair, but since he's so aggressive post flop there's still a reasonable chance he's got 88-TT. With 18 small bets in the pot, I call for a K, Q or spade.

When a spade hits and he checks the turn it's clear he doesn't have 77. The rest of the hand plays itself.

I really like the check raise in this situation, but in retrospect it may not have been a good move against such an aggressive opponent.
