A royal flush beats five of a kind. In knee britches we played Dr. Pepper, tens, twos, and fours wild. Or deuces and one-eyed Jacks wild. Some folks added a wild card and there were lots of big hands. Five of a kind beats four or a kind but a straight flush out ranks it. House rules. One of my most embarrassing moments was about the eighth grade when I called the guy I write about Curly a.k.a. Ace to ask him if four of a kind beat a straight flush during a kiddie game. I could tell he didn't like the phone call.
