bad play vs. station (live 1/2)

Postby Aisthesis » Tue May 20, 2008 11:13 am

I have 300 before this hand and bad station covers.

I limp with 6s4s in MP. Shorty (60 or so) to my left makes it 7, half the table calls, including station. Flop A44 with 2 hearts. I check, raiser bets 10, and station makes it 30.

My sense here is that she has a big hand. I really think she has a 4, but don't take my time and think this through sufficiently. My thinking at the time was more like, "Well, of the playable 4s, I'm actually in good shape--with 54 being the other plausible hand." But this is a station!

Anyhow, I raise to 100, raiser calls (I think with KK!), and station shoves. I call. She turns over K4s.

I really think this is a fold against this player. It's just pointless to play for stack when I can get money in clearly ahead so often in this game. I've seen her flat call with AA (and let like 6 players in), too, but doesn't make the raise to 30 on the flop. So, basically, I’m pretty sure she has a 4 when she raises, and my kicker is too dodgy.

A station raised at live poker. She never has an ace here...well maybe if she has AA or A4.

There is an assumption by me that when you say "station", you mean someone who only folds on the turn in every hand(never know what could peel off after the flop after all). And this same person will probably never raise when they hit a flop, unless they possess a monster.

I think you could have raised to 80 vs this player and received your answer(her push) and folded to the push. I'm not calling a station's push in live poker...ever(again) unless I have the nuts.

Trying to figure out what a station's range is at live poker is not so difficult. Start with every hand being in their range, and when they show you a hand that they aren't playing(I don't know why people show me their hands while playing live...they just do), take it out of the range. Otherwise, everything stays. :)

I wouldn't go quite so far as to say only with nuts, but definitely not here. I agree that the raise to 80 or even min raise works here, too, if one wants to test it. But I've been really working on reading hands by looking carefully at the whole "body language" thing, and I knew she had a big hand--indeed could've also been a 4 worse than mine but this is too dodgy imo. Anyhow, I mean she's calling a decent raise vs. a moderately short-stacked tighty (who had KK and also called) with K4s. That pretty much says it all...

On "the nuts" part, what I'm mainly thinking of are flushes: They do think they have the nuts with any flush, so you're good often enough with a high one on 3-flush boards. And they also typically completely ignore paired boards.
