Beginner's HU question ($100 NL)

Postby k3nt » Fri Dec 22, 2006 2:08 pm

Playing $100 6-max at Tribeca and it just cut down to 2 of us, as the Villain and I stacked everybody else (bunch of shorty morons). We both have $150+ behind.

We've played about 8 hands so far of heads up. Every time the Villain gets the button, he raises to $5. I have had crap hands the first 4 times, so I've folded each time.

Now I get [Ah][Jh] and he does it again.

I am 90% sure my hand is better right now. But I will be OOP the whole hand. Plus I will miss flopping a pair 2/3 of the time (is that correct)? So I want to reraise now, right? I mean, I can't fold, and I can't flat call.

But if he flat calls my reraise, then 2/3 of the time I will be playing a big pot oop with A-high against what appears to be a solid/aggressive player. This does not sound fun.

Wtf do I do here? How much do I reraise? What is my plan for the hand if he calls? What if he pushes?

Thanks.

He's going to miss most of the time on the flop as well (if he even calls you).

Being out of position heads up isn't as bad as with many players. There's even a benefit, since you get the chance to CB first rather than react to what the other player does.

IE, if you act last and re-raise and he calls, if he bets out on the flop because he thinks it didn't hit you, you normally have to fold. Since he knows this, he can do it whether he hits or not.

Heads up is an artform that is very dependent on your particular opponent and how the most recent hands have gone in your current session.

My point is that I think that you do have a re-raising hand, and being OOP postflop usually just makes me re-raise a little more than normal.

"Reraise pot or more." Pot would be, let's see, put in $4 to match his raise, then another $10.50 ... so $14.50 or so? Just triple his bet and go $15?

Would anybody go more? Less?

I reraised to $20, which felt huge, because I really wanted him to fold. He called. Then I fired a $30 bet ($40 pot) on the rag flop and said WHEW when he folded. But I didn't like the situation at all, and I decided I didn't want to play HU anymore pretty quickly thereafter.

Thanks for your help.

I typically make it $16 there and bet 2/3 pot on almost any flop

My advice is drop down a limit and play HU every now and then. It will improve your postflop play a lot and then you can be relatively certain that you're ahead EV-wise if you get HU with another guy when playing 6max.
Partake in my bollocks, bloody chav!

When I play a patient and relaxed game I win - that simple.
