Ok, i've been a lurker, this is my first post, and here is my situation.
I deposited $200, got a 25% bonus, so im at $250, i will be playing the $10 NL (please repress any laughter) til i increase my bankroll. I am a very tight player, and i have a pretty good understanding of the game, i really want to move up to higher limits (25nl, 50nl) yet i understand my bankroll isn't remotely close to the sufficeint amount for these games. I've played live games for about a year now, and i figured i'd give online a try. Yet here is my question, when can/should i try to take a shot at a bigger game; i know you need 25x buy in to consistently play that limit. I really want to take a shot at a bigger game, yet i know i shouldn't til i get a reasonable amount, plus i don't want to blow a good fraction of my br. So what should my br be at for a shot at 25 or 50 nl ?

Everybody steps up at a different time but here's what I do. I'm new to online ring game play so I am putting in 50 hours at the .50/1.00 level. If I am beating it for a reasonable amount, say 7-10 BB/100 hands than I will step up to the 1/2, log 50 hours there and see where I'm at. Bankroll is of course important but whether or not your are beating your current level is more important. Keep good notes, if you do not, you are probably kidding yourself more often than not.

I still believe the rule of 20 buyins to a certain game. You can probably manage on 10 if you have to...but you're certainly taking much more of a risk. If you plan on playing for a living...then 40 or 50 buyins makes more sense.
