Getting reraised when holding QQ

Postby AA.com » Wed Nov 24, 2004 3:02 pm

Just curious to know if most of you believe that if your reraised preflop while holding QQ it should be an easy lay down since your most likely, at best a 50/50 vs AK. LIkewise, any advise on laying down KK when reraised. Is it just a matter of opponent and feel of how strong the reraise was or are you just going lose some money when your up against AA? Curious to hear how others approach these situations being that Ive had KK v AA four times this week and havent been able to get away from it yet.

bad spot

AA,

This is one of the worst situations in NL poker... Playing QQ out of position to a reraise. Unless the reraiser is a complete maniac.

I think the answer depends alot on stack size.

With smallish stacks and a pot-sized reriase it is not a bad move to fold...BUT never show your cards! Not many people would make this reraise with anything lower than JJ (well I might!)

It's probably best to call with deepish stacks and play for set value. If you hit a Q on the flop you can break you opponant.

However if you call and the flop comes with 3 rags, you've got to tread very carefully, and consider folding to any stong bets. The worst thing to do is to call your opponant down all the way. If you are going to carry on after the flop (with an overpair) raise on flop and you could saftley fold to a reraise.

Just my thoughts

This might depend on how big the re-raise is. If your opponent is messing around and raising you the minimum you definitely call here. The deeper the stacks the more likely I am to call. The thing is that if the flop comes three rags you get first crack at it and if you throw out a strong pot sized bet your opponent is going to have to commit a lot of chips to a strong raise, so you protect yourself from A-K betting a wiffed flop because you are putting pressure on them and if they come over the top of you you can easily get away from the hand (something like this won't always work on Party or Empire with you only having a 50BB stack as opposed to UB or Full Tilt where you have a 100BB stack).

I recently had this exact thing happen to me at the $50 NL on UB and I misplayed it. I raised preflop in CO with QQ, then called the reraise behind me. The flop came all unders, I checked and he minimum raises. I raise he goes all-in and I called and he showed KK. I got no help...in retrospect I think I should have folded preflop.

I play pot limit. If you raise forty, you catch a re raise of 120, 160. I throw the Queens away. A pre flop re raise gets Queens pot committed against a bigger pair with a small flop as shown in the earlier post.

You are either a slight favorite to IA,K or a big dog to an overpair. Unless I am in late position, I don't raise with those trouble hands J,J or Q,Q. I saw Doyle limp with Queens on TV, then get in a great situation against top pair, Jacks.

I play Kings entirely differently. If they are beat before the flop, you can not get away. I put all the money I can in there. It is here you catch QQ,JJ,AK, or AA if you get all in.

This week I got all in with KK against JJ and AK and the KK stood up. This week I laid down QQ to a pre flop re raise and he also had QQ.

Years and years have taught me there is a big difference in KK and QQ over time. If you arrive at the river with only a pair. AA or KK will get there. QQ or JJ far less often.
