2 HU hands

Postby iceman5 » Fri Nov 30, 2007 10:42 am

$2/$4 NL HU. Villain bought for $160 which normall means hes a fish.

#1) I raise to $14 with [8h][8d]. He min reraises to $24. I call.

Pot $48. Flop [7c][6h][2c]. He open pushes for about $$140. Call or fold?

This is $1/$2 NL against a full stacked regular. I have $97

#2) I raise to $7 with [Kh][8h]. He min reraises to $12. I call.

Pot $24. Flop [Qd][8s][4c]. He bets $24. What do I do?

hand 1: This is a tough spot. I've seen this play a million times with missed over cards, especially AK. There's so many people who think once they have AK they deserve to win the pot. Of course, if he's got 2 over cards with the flush draw, you're in a lot of trouble here. And then there's the even worse scenario of being up against another overpair. I could see him doing this with TT on up, not wanting to have any more decisions out of position on a low flop. I just think the range of hands you can be up against here, you're going to be a decent favorite occasionally, a small favorite more often, and a small dog/a big dog even more often. So i'm leaning towards folding this. HU against a donk, I'd rather take spots where I feel more confident that I have the best hand to make this call.

hand 2: once again, I'm folding here. Even if he's got something like JJ/TT, he might still call a push. The best you can hope for is a missed AK in this spot. But other than that, I don't really think you have the best hand here. and with your stack I don't think you get a fold often enough in a HU situation to warrant a push.

also, in hand 2. you said this guys a regular. so what do you know about him?

have you seen him reraise a lot preflop? how about his continuation bets? does he normally bet full pot? what have you seen him do in the past with top pair? how about with mid pair? that's going to make all the difference in the world here.

Same thing for hand 1. has this guy reraised you before pre? is he aggro in general? i might be inclined to shove on him if i think he's like a lot of the LAGgers there, you know, the kind who RR any pair, any two paint, or any suited cards. I wouldn't do this against a larger stack, but against a short stacker, and especially against one who seems to have a wider reraising range than normal, I'm more inclined to take back control of the hand preflop.

I think I have to know what these min 3 bets mean before I can really get a read here.

If they are very rare it's probably a big overpair. If they do it all the time it's just a way of trying to get the vig cheap (so I'm 4 betting them a lot). My gut is that AK is so vulnerable that they would do more than min 3 bet with it.

One of the problems with commenting on isolated HU hands is that HU is really all about the flow...

I've been playing some HU (between $50 and $200) the last week or so and boy is it easy - most have some sort of pre-flop raising and 3 betting strategy in place but they are often so overggro post-flop that they stack off to any decent hand. Running at something ridiculous like 26PTBB/100 HU at the moment.

CardRunners is excellent for HU btw - they have 25 HU cash game vids, mostly by their better players (and abou the same number of SnG's). My goal is to watch one a night this month to really get a grip on HU play..
