How to get action

Postby BadBeatMan » Sat Mar 26, 2005 11:12 am

Hi guys,
My first post...been lurking forever

I know there are a lot of great players browsing this site all the time, and I could use some help.

I, for the most part, am a tight player. Yet when I get involved in a pot, I play it very aggressivley. Therefore, when I play a pot, with my aggressive style I barely get any action and rarely pick up a monster pot. Very few of my hands go to showdown, and I understand that that's a good thing. But it would be nice to showdown every once in a while and get paid off with the nut straight or something. I know that if I want an opponent in a hand i need to give him correct pot odds to stay in it, but at the same time I dont want a set to get drawn out on. I guess this is a dilemma everyone faces but probably plays them better than I do. Thanks Guys.

What limits do you play at and where (online b/m)? You are describing a very bad game, a game where most of the players have a solid read on you and wont give you action. It's been my experience that at the low levels of NL (casino and online) the players are totally unable to figure out that you are playing tight and I get paid off on most of my good hands even though I hardly ever play a pot.

If you are playing the higher limit games where there is a smaller pool of players than I could see this happening.let us know

I hardly ever win monster hands that take stacks...if that makes you feel better. I usually go up slowly, unless I hit a set against AA or something.

I would agree w/ YD, badbeat... There are times I'll go hours and play 5 or 6 hands... I'm as tight as a witch's ****, and people, especially online, will still call me when I have the nuts... Occasionally, if I bet BIG, they'll pay attention and fold, but if you slowplay the nuts, there's always a bonehead out there that will bleed himself to death, refusing to believe their TPTK won't hold up w/ a paired board and a straight and flush draw on the board...

I know when you said "I know there are a lot of great players browsing this site all the time", you weren't looking for my opinion, but figured I'd throw my 2 cents in...

When I'm in a game that won't give up action, I play the button and cutoff more aggressively with any two, I'm likely to start raising more questionable hands and attempt to play a controlled loose aggressive game. You will pick up a couple of more small pots an hour with limp steals in late, and be giving up more action in general with raises. I also semi-bluff a great deal as it builds the pot or wins it out right, I might play a straight on three flush board against a short stack and give up some action with an inexpensive second best hand. Observant players see these actions will be more likely to give me more action on my really good hands. If I'm not in the mood to be raising sevens two off the button, I look for a game that is better for a squeezer style and switch tables.

Slow playing is a disease, and rarely the right play, especially in the low and middle stakes no limit games. Bet big win big! The only time I think it might be is against a complete maniac when you have the locked up nuts and they are going ape. In general unless there is an exceptionally bad player at the table my stack slowly grows too, the times it grows quick are the times it is likely to shrink quick too, like catching a bunch of JJ or QQ hands in late that have to be let go of on the flop or "Bet big win big!" becomes Bet big lose big and I'm getting hammered by bottom set with two pair or chasers getting there.
