Inducing a bluff?

Postby iceman5 » Fri Jan 14, 2005 12:15 pm

$200NL at Gaming Club. Im UTG and raise to $10 with [Qh][Qs]. I get 2 EP callers who both have me covered. I have a full stack.

The first caller I dont know, but the sceond one is a major calling station. He plays literally EVERY hand, although Im not sure what he will call a raise with. He just won a big pot when he called a raise with AJ and call every street with an ace on the flop and hit his kicker to beat AK

So the pot is $33 and the flop comes [5h][4d][2s]. I bet $20. Only the calling station calls.
The pot is now $73 and the turn is the [6c]. I bet $50 and he calls.
The pot is $173. The river is the [Th]. I check hoping like hell he checks behind, but he puts me all in for $120 or so. What do you do?

Alot of times checking that river will induce a bluff, but all in? I doubt he has the straight and if he had a set wouldnt he have raised somewhere?

It's possible that he flopped a set and was planning for a big raise on the river, but that would be an unusual play.

What makes the most sense to me is that he had an overpair to the flop. 77-JJ. Personally I would expect him to raise or fold before the river with a holding like that, but maybe he was flat calling hoping you would back off.

Now the river comes. TT is a hand he could still have, but there are more combinations of other pairs (or even AK) that he could have as well. I might be tempted to pay this off, just because it's so hard to put him on a hand that would beat you other than TT.

This guy plays his hands really passively, how did he play it when he rivered his kicker against A-K (assuming they weren't all in before then)?

Since he is a calling station he is probably also a very passive player so I'd be afraid when he switches gears and moves in on you at the river, I doubt he is bluffing (though Jav might be right in that he *thinks* he has the best hand). I get myself into a lot of trouble in these spots, I doubt it is correct to call here.

If he plays literally every hand, why can't he have a 3? Maybe even A3 for the flopped straight. If he's a calling station, this is exactly how he will play that hand.

Also, checking to him on the river may have been a mistake. Maybe if you just bet 5 bucks on the river he calls that bet too! He's probably not used to figuring out how much to bet on his own, so he picked a random number and went all-in. :)

I don't know what on earth is going on with this guy, and because of that I sure can't make the call.

I fold here, a calling station playing agressively usually mean your up against a big hand.

I normally have a rule that I dont call an all in or a bet of that size without a good idea of what the opponent has, but I stray from the rule now and then depending on the circumstance and even more so depending on the player. Since this player was so weak, and since Im pretty sure he wouldnt have made that bet if I hadnt checked...I called. I won the hand but I dont know what he had yet because I couldnt get the hand history yet.

I'll post what he had later tonight.

What made you think that he made that bet because he checked? If he was bluffing a scary board maybe he isn't as weak as you perceive him to be?

Ive been making that move more and more lately. Checking the river after betting fairly strongly the rest of the hand. They almost always bet after I check. They assume that I was bluffing and decided to give up. They dont normally go all in though. They normally make a 3/4 pot bet or so and when I call, I win almost every time.
He obviously thought I had AK and couldnt call.
Im guessing he had 99 but I'll let you know in a couple hours when I get home.

You win almost everytime you check the river and they bet out?? you have better luck then me. I always end up being up against trips.

As for the hand. Pocket 33 maybe?? Possibly trips....I still probably call this though in the heat of the moment...there is so many different possibilties. JJ for instance.

I just had a thought. AA is a strong possibility as well. Calling stations just love to slow play aces as much as they can.

Yeah, when you get your hand summary from TGC, they don't actually show what your opponent has. Very frustrating. Even moreso when they win with a flush or straight with one of their cards. You can't see if they other card was a pair on the board or an ace or just a rag.

Benny
If you get PokerTracker it will be show you what hand they mucked if the hand goes to showdown. For some odd reason, this one hand for Ice doesn't work. But I haven't had any problems with it at all.
