I figure he probably has a set:
- is this FR? is he any good? he called a 5xBB raise MP (tried to limp EP first then also called the raise) so that should help you define his hand a lot better, depending on your read
- he probably didn't hit two pair or the tens, based on the hands he may have called with preflop
- he would have raised before you did preflop with AA KK QQ JJ
- he'd have let go of the hand by the turn bet with AK or any other drawing hand (up to your read)

So I'd say your looking at TT or 99 most likely

Don't get flustered to push just because it is a small reraise, just think objectively
People hate folding small bets and people hate calling and losing their betting lead, so it is often used to make a weaker hand induce all-in

When you have a reason to believe he would call with a x10 in MP from a 5xBB preflop bet, or sneak limp with big pairs, then you can stick it to him in a situation like this, otherwise you are just up against trips

Save the CB disguising card tricks for when you know his hands better than he does, when you can fold or push a raise of any degree with more confidence

I was UTG. I had 33 and min raised him and he pushed just like alot of you guys wanted to do. I stacked his AA.

Not only did I stack him, but it was not just a stack, it was $245. You should just about never lose that much money with one pair in this spot.

Ive been saying for 3 years here and on UPF that min raise is a monster. A min CHECK raise is almost always a monster and a min raise on the turn in a raised pot is a monster often enough that you should fold every time unless you have a monster yourself (and on overpair isnt a monster).......but still alot of you BTPers who are much better than avg players STILL want to push. This is EXACTLY why a min raise works and its exactly why it is a great play. I didnt play this like a moron. NL is all about making whatever play you think you need to do to get a guy all in when youre ahead. The min raise pisses people off and makes them make a stupid mistake.

Another "idiotic" play might be to just push the flop with a huge overbet. AA will call there almost every time.

I stopped making this play along time ago because "only donks do it", but Im going back to it because it works every time. So if you want to call me a donk, then I'll be a donk with the money.

"#3 pencils and quadrille pads."
- Seymoure Cray (1925-1996) when asked what CAD tools he used to design the Cray I supercomputer; he also recommended using the back side of the pages so that the grid lines were not so dominant.

"Interesting - I use a Mac to help me design the next Cray."
- Seymoure Cray (1925-1996) when he was told that Apple Inc. had recently bought a Cray supercomputer to help them design the next Mac.

i dont know about Zmej's logic on this specific hand, just because of how large the pot is getting.

but in general i agree: if your opponent's range includes some hands that beat you and some hands that don't..........then in a lot of cases raising will generally make him fold the hands you beat and he'll stack you with hands that are better.

The push or fold mentality is over simplified and destroys the value of many hands. Hell, in his latest book Sklansky talks about how it is OK to call a bet on one street just to see if villain is going to bet again.

Calling eh
You are getting 4.5 to 1 hoping he checks the river after you give up the betting lead
If you think he'd let that slide and would check the river with a hand that you'd beat, then do it
But if I had enough info on the guy to decide that then I would have enough to decide whether to push or fold in this instance, both of which are better plays

I would be willing to bet alot of money that Sklansky has NOT won more money than me relative to the stakes he plays and how much he plays.

He writes book after book, including several tournement books but how often does he make final tables? Maybe he has some non televised ones, but Ive seen him one time on TV and he did nothing special. People like Negreanu and Chan and plenty of others are much better tourney players than he is. I dont know if he even plays cash games. If he does, hes not making any noise in them or you would hear about it.

There are many many many people who would be better suited to be giving out poker advice that he is. Hes making his money writing books, not playing poker.

Im sure he is smarter than I am and probably knows more poker theory than I do, but Im not convinced for a second that he can out play me and Im pretty sure that he would get crushed in most high stakes online games.

I mean, who the hell is he? Hes a writer. Big deal. Why his word means anything to anyone is beyond me.

I can think of about 100 people that I would rather write a book about poker. People who are in the trenches everyday.

As far as the idea of calling a bet just to see if the guy will bet again, I can see that in certain spots, but this hand isnt one of them. Without knowing exactly what he meant, it sounds to me like hes talking about floating a flop which he didnt exactly invent.

Ice, the man writes really good books.
It doesn't matter what his results are in practice.
If you disagree with something he writes, make an argument for it.
Arguing on the basis of authorship is BS and should never even enter the discussion.

Lots of good players would make absolutely awful authors.

P.S. Sklansky just made $420k in a Borgata tournament last month.
