Overpairs facing CHRONIC minraises 100NLFR

Postby TheMoose15 » Sat May 20, 2006 2:23 am

Last night it seemed I was getting minraised on the flop 2/3 of the time with my overpairs. I usually follow the minraise = monster line, but seriously they can't have it everytime. I was going to post this earlier, but decided to wait for LuparFiends post to play out since we are having similiar overpair issues. I've read plenty of threads discussing this problem and I almost find a double standard. Players that call off their stacks with overpairs = donks, but many threads where "hero" has the overpair I see replies such as ALLIN and, "no way am I folding KK in that spot." Nothing against you guys just some of my useless candid observations. I know the question really depends on the situation and reads however, any insight is greatly appreciated. On to the HANDS!

Hand 1: Here's a quick KK hand, I played it pretty standard I probably should raise the flop more to around 20$. I really hate this situation. I figure I am only beating QQ, JJ which are both possible, but I just don't feel confident stacking off here. Should this be an easy call/push ? Button: 101 hands, 27.72VP$IP, rated as sLP. Oh, btw I love the 2 cold calls of 7x BB classic Party.

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (10 handed) from (Format: FlopTurnRiver)

MP2 ($98.40)
Hero ($98.50)
CO ($100)
Button ($153.47)
SB ($152.50)
BB ($120.61)
UTG ($99.05)
UTG+1 ($122.52)
UTG+2 ($244.65)
MP1 ($34.77)

Preflop: Hero is MP3 with KImage, KImage. CO posts a blind of $1. SB posts a blind of $0.50.
2 folds, UTG+2 calls $1, MP1 calls $1, 1 fold, Hero raises to $7, 1 fold, Button calls $7, SB (poster) calls $6.50, 1 fold, UTG+2 folds, MP1 folds.

Flop: ($25) TImage, 2Image, 3Image (3 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $15, Button raises to $30, SB folds, Hero folds.

Final Pot: $70

Hand 2: QQ was raping me all night. I swear I would get raised every single flop. This is pretty much the same as the previous example. Do you do anything differently in this hand than the one posted above? At the time I had no read, but at the end of the session - MP1: 61hands, 59.02VP$IP, around 2.0 agg. Does the read change your decision?

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ Hero (10 handed) from (Format: FlopTurnRiver)

CO ($155)
Button ($82.14)
SB ($99.70)
Hero ($164.55)
UTG ($139.22)
UTG+1 ($164.60)
UTG+2 ($123.35)
MP1 ($103.15)
MP2 ($97.50)
MP3 ($96.90)

Preflop: Hero is BB with QImage, QImage. SB posts a blind of $0.50.
3 folds, MP1 calls $1, 5 folds, Hero raises to $3, MP1 calls $3.

Flop: ($8.50) 6Image, TImage, 9Image (2 players)
Hero bets $7, MP1 raises to $14, Hero folds.

Final Pot: $29.50

Thanks for the analysis.

This is not going to help you...not directly...but maybe people are seeing you as weak tight. Sometimes if I think a guy at 100NL will lay down to a min raise, I'll min raise him on the flop. It's a great bluff for me, because I don't have to invest much to make it work. What I am really trying to do is to pick off guys making continuation bets with AK when they miss the flop. And it's not totally a bluff, because if I have 88 or something and he missed with AK, I have the best hand.

So my advice, especially if this is happening more than once at a table, is to pick a spot and push back.

Second piece of advice, regarding hand 1. Make that continuation bet more like $20. $15 is close to half the pot and a lot of guys see that and think "he missed with his AK". Make his min-raise more expensive if that's his play.

Hand two I like that spot for a reraise. He raises to $14, you make it $35. If he pushes you can still get away. A LOT of people make that raise there with either 77 or 88, figuring that no matter what they have 6 outs.

Your laydown on hand two is REALLY weak. You folded for $7 when the pot was $29. That makes me sad. You are getting 4-1. He could have a suited JT, a pair of 8s, suited AT, or any number of hands that are behind you. I'd say it's about 75% likely you are ahead. Even if it was 75% likely you were behind you should call here!

I've had trouble with this sort of thing too. At 100NL FR if they see you folding to a min raise you're starting to get players who will try to push you off pots because they think your value bet with AA/KK/QQ might be a CB with AK/AQ. A lot of the time they'll either have a small/medium pocket pair, or have hit the flop in some way with their suited connectors, but you may well be ahead.

As mike said, at some point you just have to take a stand or find another table, but whatever you do you must make a note against that player.

When I play a patient and relaxed game I win - that simple.
