Playing passive (200NL FR)

Postby Triple B » Fri May 12, 2006 4:02 pm

Here are a couple of hands where I played them very passively. I played TP like a draw in both cases. Am I a calling station or am I trappy? (Villain is different in each hand)

Villain and I are both full stacked in this hand:

Pre-flop: (7 players) Hero is MP1 with [9d] [Td]
UTG folds, UTG+1 calls, Hero calls, CO folds, Button raises to $6, 2 folds, UTG+1 calls, Hero calls.

Cheap to play, so I call.

Flop: [5s] [5h] [9s] ($21, 3 players)
UTG+1 checks, Hero checks, Button bets $10, UTG+1 folds, Hero calls.

I'm not willing to put him on an overpair just yet, plus his bet is quite weak. He is fairly new to the table so I'm not sure what this means. Why didn't I raise? I want to see the turn. If he fires big on the turn I might fold.

Turn: [6c] ($41, 2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets $14, Hero calls.

Very weak bet here again, I'm pretty sure this is a blocking bet (missed overcards), but I continue to play passively and call.

River: [3h] ($69, 2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets $68 Hero calls.

All of a sudden villain wakes up and starts betting big. Do you call? I think villain has me on a draw. He is betting big to get me to fold my draw, so I call.

Results:
Final pot: $205
Hero showed 9d Td
Button showed Jc Ad

How else do you win this much on a marginal hand like this?

This next hand I am almost double stacked and villain is 1/2 stacked.

Pre-flop: (8 players) Hero is SB with [6d] [Ah]
5 folds, Button calls, Hero calls, BB checks.

Flop: [7d] [As] [8d] ($6, 3 players)
Hero checks, BB checks, Button bets $6, Hero calls, BB folds.

I check here hoping to induce a bluff from a weaker hand. Same as hand above, notice the flush draw on board. I decide right here that I am going to sell this as a draw.

Turn: [Kh] ($18, 2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets $15, Hero calls.

Here I am, donking it up calling a big turn bet with my "flush draw"

River: [5s] ($48, 2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets $35, Hero calls.

This doesn't look like a value bet to me, and I have represented a draw the whole way. Villain doesn't have a clue what I have. I call.

Results:
Final pot: $118
Button showed 5c 3c
Hero showed 6d Ah

After this hand, villian says, "I put you on a draw". I say, " I know". LOL

Anyway...does anyone like my lines here? I realize I am potentially letting people outdraw me, but I think the risk is worth it (occasionally) if villain shows the potential to be this blufftastic.

Well, I don't know what calling stations think when they call with any piece of flop, but may be they think in a similar line: Is he bluffing? - Yeah, seems to me. - I'll call. :D

Seriously, a good play if you have a GOOD read. I played like this in 6 max with a right opponent it can be succesfull, but without a read I don't like it.

The amount of the bet means nothing, there are players who bet half pot with sets.
Potting flop, turn, river could have been strong ace who puts you on draw or a weak A.

Honestly, I probably would have folded preflop. I don't wanna play Axo in first position, even for half the price.

Both villains are morons. You dont bet THAT much on the river to get a draw to fold. A draw wont call anything.

I cant say that I like you play much either though. Hand #2 is especially bad.

Hand #1, when he fires that big a bet on the river after those smaller bets on the flop and turn, I think you have the winner although, I wouldve played differently thruought the hand. Hes not betting that big to make a draw fold. hes betting that big because hes bluffing and hopes you wont call. If you missed your draw he could bet $10 and you would fold.

Hand 2 - Keep in mind villian open limped on the button. Most will raise with an ace better than mine (and 77, 88, maybe 87). He thinks I would lead out with an Ace, so my check induced him to BTP to steal. IMO I am rarely behind here. I check again on the turn to induce another bet and represent a draw. If he checks behind, I'm still OK against most hands, as he likely had nothing on the flop. If he hit a K on the turn, all the better for me. The river 5 can only help him if he was betting some wacky stright draw the whole way instead of taking a free card when he could have on the turn.

Most of the time I would lead out on that flop (or check raise). If I did that, I will win a $6-$12 pot instead of over $100 in this case.

In both hands (in particular hand 2) I have succeeded in disguising my hand and caused bad players to make big mistakes. Win or lose, they lost a whole lot of Sklansky bucks on these hands. I have also got some advertising out of this if anyone is paying attention, as I would not normally play these hands in this fashion.
