Playing sets in position

Postby Smokin'Al » Wed Mar 02, 2005 4:43 pm

Anyone else much prefer playing sets out of position?

Here's an example of what's happened to be the last few times I've had a set and position - how suboptimal is my play here?

Party PL 1/2. I have $450 with [7c] [7d] in LP, villain has $220 and open raises to $7 from MP. I'm the only caller.

The flop is [Th] [7s] [2s] ($17). Villain bets $15 and I just call (is a raise here better - and to how much if so?)

The turn is ([Th] [7s] [2s]) [8c] ($47). Villain bets $35 ... he must have an overpair here, time to pull the trigger ... I raise to $80. Villain thinks for ages and folds. D'oh! Anyone just call again, and leave the pyrotechnics for the river?

Looking back at this, my set looks pretty obvious. Say I raise the flop to $50 and he just calls. Is a 2/3 pot bet on turn and river a good line?

You played it just fine. The average Party 1/2 player is not gonna be able to read you for a set at all. As a matter of fact, because you raised the turn it's tough to put you on a hand, period. If he had an overpair he would have called or re-raised in all liklihood so it seems like he was probably on a missed AK. Depending on the opponent I might raise the flop but I'm raising the turn FOR SURE. You probably need to raise a little bit more, too. Almost half the deck will put a flush out or 4 to a straight. Which means it will either kill your action or let him draw out on you. (Any 6, 9, J, spade)

he is going to play his hand....getting too cute can let the guy hit a gutshot, or a flush.....i would have min raised the flop bet. might have smooth called, you got $35 for free and you didn't have to see a potential flush or 4-straight on the board....i'd say you did fine there

You played this hand fine. I would have done it the same way, try to pot commit him a little on the flop by calling a try to get him to call a moderate reraise on the turn and extract a lbigger bet on the river. I doubt this guy has an overpair , for likely AK or AQ.

To answer your question, no there is ablsolutly no time I'd rather play my set out of postion.

Really? In the case of a pre-flop raiser, the question wasn't facetious... life is really simple out of position: you divide the amount of money you have into three increasing portions (x, 3x, and 9x, say), and bet on each street. If you get raised at any stage your opponent has probably pot committed himself.

The problem I have with playing in position is that you probably have to raise at some point, which shows a lot of strength and gives the overpair a chance to fold, if he's any good.

Am I being stupid here?
