I think you get more deception with a bet here than a check.

If you flopped a set your playing it exactly the way a poor player would. You see your safe so you try and let the other man bet. I think a weak bet would serve you better by building the pot and making it seem like you're probing. If he's got a set he's stacking you. If he's got TJ, playable by a LA, your letting him draw.

Personally I'm making a larger raise on this flop. If I get stacked, I think thats the way it goes.

I assume by the title of your post that you won the hand and that he had something donkish like AQ or maybe AK, but otherwise I would be uncertain about whether or not you were ahead. You said he was a LAP, does that mean loose passive?

Re-raising so much preflop and then checking the flop, if I were him I would think you had KK. How could that be a bad flop for any hand with which you would re-raise big preflop?

Not to be an ass, but I don't get how anyone can see this is as good play. What are you representing by checking behind on the flop? JJ? As black_knight said, it just screams set. If I had 44 and you checked behind me on that flop I'd almost be scared to put any more money in.

Maybe I'm wrong in thinking this way but if I re-raise preflop 14x the BB, I'm betting the flop regardless of the cards.

And I think black_knight makes a good point, that if you were trying to keep the pot small, wouldn't you check the river instead of value betting it?

Even at NL100 you need to have a read before you start doing tricky stuff like this. Did you have some specific tendency you intended to exploit? If so, include your read within the post. Absent a read bet that overpair for value and keep betting it, but frankly once he calls the flop, you don't want to play for stack. This is because, without any kind of read, you have no idea what his coldcalls mean.

Actually, I'm a fan of this line as well against your opponent in position here. He probably won't put you on the overpair, although with his river call, I'm thinking that he probably would be rated as a calling station. I really can't imagine him having anything bigger than AQ, QJ, or KJ in this spot(I think his PFR selection might be wider than Trod's assumption). I think he only calls here because he has you on a bluff and hit a piece of the flop.

So yeah, this play might have worked really well against a passive player who may want to play it safe postflop. Although, if he bet into you on the turn, I would have absolutely no idea where I was at and might be forced to lay it down(judging by his passive tendencies).
