Rules Question

Postby Bob314 » Sun Nov 28, 2004 8:55 pm

I saw a question from Iceman posted in the limit forum and it reminded me of a question that we've had in a home NL game locally.

3 handed play. There is a $60 stack sitting in between two $200 stacks. One of the $200 stacks bets $50 into a pot and the $60 stack moves all in. The $60 all in isn't a complete raise (You have to raise at least in increment, so a raise would have to be at least $100 as I understand it) so does this mean that the third player in can only call the $60 since it wasn't a full raise?

Yes, you are correct. The all in is not a full raise and can only be called.

I personally HATE this rule and think it's ridiculous, but as I understand it you're correct. A number of the online sites (PokerStars is one, I believe) stick to this rule, despite the fact that it's silly.

I know Royal Vegas does NOT stick to this rule and it has hurt me a couple of times. This is the prime example:

you call a legit raise with a pocket pair. gets down to the BB who has $1 or $2 above the intial raise. He moves all-in. Now the preflop raiser decides there is too many callers for his aces down and reraises a crap load. You have to fold as your odds have been killed. You see the hand, you would have flopped the set and taken his stack. I think this has happened to me twice now on Royal Vegas.

Not on Party Poker

Postby Danhdan » Mon Nov 29, 2004 10:07 am

Never even heard of this rule in any type of play either...No Limit I thought meant you can shove all of you chips in at any time, and this rule doesn't seem to follow that one in the least.

Back to the example...tell me why the 3rd player who has $60 can only call the allin bet of the second player and not reraise here???

situation error

Postby Bob314 » Mon Nov 29, 2004 10:14 am

Danhdan, you're right, I messed up my situation. The kind I meant to describe would be where you have two $200 stacks followed by the $60 stack. The first $200 stafck would bet $50, the second $200 stack would call, then the $60 stack pushes. Since the $60 stack's all in raise isn't $50 or more neither of the larger stacks is allowed to raise on top of the all in.

Interesting...

I know that limit games at the card houses around here in San Jose have that rule, where you cannot reraise in that situation, but I have still never seen it applied in a house game or NL ring game at a casino(althought I must admit, my casino NL experience is very limited).

Thank you for the info though...and that rule definitely makes sense to me now here.
