Some $1000 NL action

Postby briachek » Fri Mar 04, 2005 1:16 am

Well, I decided to try and make up my $500 losses by going nuts and trying to make it all at the $1000 NL tables. Since they were new to party, I was pretty sure that no one knew how to play because its party. A couple hands I want to share.

Hand 1

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $10 BB (9 handed)

BB ($432)
Hero ($702) I got a little short stacked at first. That's about to change
UTG+1 ($542)
MP1 ($844)
MP2 ($1526.5)
MP3 ($2721)
CO ($930)
Button ($973.75)
SB ($990)

I'm UTG with AA. I raise to $20 to try to get some callers and I got a few.

Flop: ($15) [Ac], [5d], [8c] (9 players)
Hero checks, UTG+1 checks, MP3 bets $35, Hero raises to $125, UTG+1 folds, MP3 calls $90.

Turn: ($265) [4s] (8 players)
Hero bets $557 (All-In), MP3 calls $557.

River: ($1379) [Qc] (8 players, 1 all-in)

Final Pot: $1379

Results in white below:
Hero has As Ah (three of a kind, aces).
MP3 has Ad 5h (two pair, aces and fives).

Outcome: Hero wins $1379.

Ok, I'm back in the game.

Hand 2

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $10 BB (9 handed)

MP3 ($985)
CO ($1335.75)
Hero ($2744.25) I've built it up a little
SB ($555)
BB ($1002)
UTG ($2082)
UTG+1 ($5540.5)
MP1 ($1191)

I'm on the button with QQ. There are a couple limpers then MP3 raises to 60, CO calls, I decide to pop it to 325 as the CO is a calling station. All fold to CO who calls.

Flop: ($740) [3h], [Jd], [2s] (9 players)
CO checks, Hero bets $1100, CO calls $1010.75 (All-In).

Turn: ($2125.75) [9c] (9 players, 1 all-in)

River: ($2125.75) [4d] (9 players, 1 all-in)

Final Pot: $2125.75

Results in white below:
CO has Qh Jh (one pair, jacks).
Hero has Qd Qc (one pair, queens).

Outcome: Hero wins $2125.75.

I told you the CO was a calling station.

Final hand of the night on the second table I was playing

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $10 BB (9 handed)

Hero ($1892.25)
MP1 ($1060)
MP2 ($417)
MP3 ($995.5)
CO ($355)
Button ($805)
SB ($138.5)
BB ($3047.75)

I'm UTG+1 with JJ so I raise it to $30. I get a few callers.

Flop: ($15) [Tc], [Jh], [4h] (9 players)
BB checks, checks, Heor bets $60, MP2 raises to $387 (All-In), BB calls $387, UTG raises to $1787 (All-In), Hero raises to $1862.25 (All-In), BB calls $1475.25.

Turn: ($5913.50) [Qd] (9 players, 3 all-in)

River: ($5913.50) [4c] (9 players, 3 all-in)

Final Pot: $5913.50

Results in white below:

BB has Kh Qh (two pair, queens and fours).
UTG has Ah 8h (one pair, fours).
Hero has Jd Js (full house, jacks full of fours).
MP2 has 5h 6h (one pair, fours).

Outcome: Hero wins $5913.50.

So I finish the night up about 8500 or so. Not too bad. I think I will be posting my best month ever even with my beginning losing streak. I put up my best month in Feb being up about 1k, I think this is a nice boost.

How do you think I did? Anyone play these any different?

MP2 ($1404)
CO ($777)
Button ($3355.87)
SB ($1134.75)
BB ($1072.25)
UTG ($1215)

I'm UTG + 1 with QQ. I raise to 45 and get 3 callers.

UTG checks, Hero bets $150, MP1 raises to $450, CO folds, UTG folds, Hero calls $300.

Turn: ($915) [5s] (6 players)
Hero checks, MP1 bets $1175.13 (All-In), Hero calls $1175.13.

River: ($3265.26) [4d] (6 players, 1 all-in)

MP1 has Td Ts (full house, fives full of tens).
Outcome: wins $3265.26.

I later lost some of this on a suck out and some fany play or I would have been up over 10K for the night. Stupid me. I guess I just suck at poker.

Please don't take this the wrong way Briachek. But I have to say it. This was a real bone-headed move on your part. There is no other way I can say it. I am honestly happy for you that you won 8500 but I can't say that I would have supported any of this.

I have been in your shoes several times where I hit a losing streak and ended up playing above my bankroll. Sometimes it works out in the beginning but there is a reason why you aren't supposed to play out of your limits. If you didn't have 5K at the start of the day you would be insane to play 1000NL. Obviously you need to have 10K to realistically take a shot and 20K to play in it regularly. But numbers aside, you can quickly lose a grand. Or two grand. If it's one thing I know about Party games, it's that the games are extremely loose-aggressive and high-variance. You can be the best NL player in the World and drop two buyins in a day. Shit like that just happens. When I went on a 1.5K losing streak I played 5/10NL and lost 1K more on horrible beats. About 6 months ago when I was still relatively new to online poker I did the same thing by playing 2/4NL and 10/20 limit and got my ass kicked. You might be able to beat the 1000NL game on Party because the players certainly aren't great, but if you get a dry run of cards you are completely f*cked. You hit several top sets and had them all hold up, but if a couple hands go the other way you are down 2K now thinking how big a mistake it was. Trust me, you were so close to that happening. Take the money and realize how fortunate you were for this to have worked out for you. LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKE PLEASE and don't do the same thing again. I don't want you to make the same mistakes I made.

And congrats on the huge score. 8.5K is BIG.

Lol that's crazy man :D good going...

I was thinking the same  is this the same Briachek who was playing the $25 games a while back (certainly on PLO!)...? Madness

You've also eclipsed my biggest ever pot in that session; though seriously, that was very reckless and you could easily have pretty much ended your poker career in that session  say you got beaten or AA cracked early on, lost a grand on one hand after your recent $500 downswing? Would you still be here or saying goodbye to poker for the mean time? I suspect the latter!

You certainly have my respect for making a big gamble though, and making it pay off :D i'm not keen on the idea of losing $1000 in one hand so I think i'll stick to the low-rolling down at $100 and $200

I guess your problem now is, now you've had a taste of the $1000's, can you move back down to play games at 10 or 5% of this size? I think this is ideal because you took a very unwise shot, got lucky, and now you have massively increased your BR to the point where presumably you now have enough to comfortably play the $100's and 200s as well as posting a collosal month.

I agree that you took a massive and rather unwise risk, but gambling is, I guess, the name of the game; just don't do anything this stupid again, and don't push your luck! Congratulations on your massive result and GL with using your brand spanking new BR lol... I guess this must've been quite some rush for you, I only hope you can go down to the smaller games now and continue to play them seriously, the only danger for you now is that you'll continue to hit up these 1000 games without an adequate BR and take a beating. Well done anyhow, you're a braver man than I :D

PS Does this mean I can expect to see you on the $400 or $1000 games at gaming club now??? I will keep my eyes open!

Also, having had such a lucky run in your reckless gamble, you can now no longer complain about losing streaks, bad runs or bad luck ever again... Just remember this session and recall how fortunate you were not to lose your bankroll!
